New gallery is all set to open

A SCARBOROUGH businesswoman is set to open a gallery and a Victorian-style art boutique in South Street.

Elizabeth Diver, who owns Francis Tea Rooms, will launch The South Street Gallery and Rosie’s Boudoir opposite her cafe on Saturday.

They are based in a former launderette, which opened 43 years ago and was once used in an episode of Heartbeat.

The South Street Gallery’s official opening will be between noon and 5pm. The aim is to showcase contemporary works by established and emerging national and regional artists.

The opening exhibition, First Things First, features local artists such as Steve Whitehead, Kane Cunningham, Sally Gatie, David Chalmers and Andrew Cheetham.

Rosie’s Boudoir is next to the gallery and named after Rosie Richer, who supplied the boutique’s vintage clothing and accessories.

The gallery and boutique will be managed by Scarborough artist Angela Chalmers.

Ms Diver said: “It’s very exciting and I just can’t wait for all the artwork to be in there and displayed. Scarborough is home to some very talented people and local artists. I felt that it would be quite an exciting venture to use the space that has been created in the old launderette to exhibit the work.

“Rosie Richer used to be a model in London. She has moved to York and has always had an interest in fashion, vintage clothes, and to have things in a shop is something she always wanted to do.”
