Mil-let’s find a new shop tenant!
Millets closure 120727
IT is hoped that a new company will pitch its tent in Scarborough.
JD Sports bought out the Blacks outdoor store chain, which owned Millets outlets, but opted not to take over the Scarborough branch.
The former Millets in Westborough was being stripped yesterday and Michael Fawley, of estate agent Fawley Watson Booth, said he hoped the space would be occupied again soon.
He added: “There’s been limited interest so far, but we’d be very disappointed if it stuck around for a while.”
The store is being advertised on a leasehold basis for £80,000 rent with an additional £29,000 payable in rates.
It has a ground sales area of 1,036 sq ft, 425 sq ft of ancillary space and width of 7.62 metres.
A sign was put up at the store advising shoppers that the nearest Millets outlet to Scarborough is now in Beverley.

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 07:52 PMGood luck to whoever is brave enough to take this shop on. £109000 is a ridiculous amount of money, but hopefully joe public will now realise what costs running a shop entails before expecting everything for nothing. Was Fawley Watson Booth chosen as the agent because of their success in handling the former Click Photo eyesore opposite M&S! About 3 years on the market at a guess. #3 Unfortunately the business rates go to central government so we cant even pay for a Mayoral car if the shop is let.

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 04:52 PMIsn't there a need for another pawn shop there? Or an ex-catalogue, pound shop, tat shop or perhaps a pizza, kebab, fried muck takeaway? This is Scarborough after all, so we can't expect anything just a little bit classier can we??

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 12:36 PMAnd now we can see why shops are failing faster than they can open up. as mentioned previously £109,000 before you even see a penny of profit. Get ready to see way more shops close due to the councils sky high rates. In ten years high streets wont exist. it will all be online. And at last SEN chance of a story "Dead Body @ Millets" .... but yet again you cut and paste journalism fails yours readers !!

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 11:15 AMIt is not surprising why so many town centres have so much empty space with those costs. I did hear on the radio that for the companies that own the properties (often pension funds), it makes no difference to them financially if they are occupied or not. Sounds crazy economics.

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 10:24 AMThat is crazy as makes no sense points out. How can that be viable for any company? Whoever owns this shop must realise that those happy days are gone and now they must charge something more reasonable, otherwise nobody will want the shop. 29k in rates! how does a business run up such cost to the council? What do they provide, I don't understand.
