'Let's move forward with sports village' COMMENT ON THIS STORY

HOPES the community will come together in the development of a new sports village for the town have been raised by Scarborough Council.

Council strategic director Hilary Jones, speaking on Wednesday at a forum organised by Scarborough Athletic FC at Scarborough Cricket Club, reiterated the authority's commitment to the project.

And Mrs Jones said the council was now ready to speak with interested parties and developers to take the proposed site forward.

"We are looking to involve many interested parties in the development and building of the site, which should take between three and five years to build," she said. "We have waited to start the consultation process as we didn't want to raise expectations too early, but now the economy is beginning to balance the time has come to move the project ahead."

The plan could include both wet and dry sports areas, bringing together the facilities currently in two places at the Filey Road Sports Centre, and North Bay Swimming Pool, as well as a new football stadium.

Brian Bennett, the council's head of tourism and culture, who has worked on a similar project for Colchester United FC, explained how the site could come together.

He said: "There is a possibility of multi-storey buildings to double the space required due to the topography of the site, and the area covered will stretch from the old coach-park to level with the tunnel which runs under the train line.

"The new facilities will be built before the existing sites are demolished.

"Our main goal is to provide a sustainable facility for football and sport in the town, and one which the whole community can use and be proud of."

Scarborough has been without a football ground since the McCain Stadium closed following the demise of Scarborough FC in 2007.
