Jobs saved as store is given reprieve

A SCARBOROUGH town centre shop has been spared the axe, safeguarding eleven jobs.
Staff at Bonmarché, in Westborough, were informed yesterday morning that their store would be one of 230 kept open.
It was a happy conclusion to what would have certainly been a stressful 24 hours for staff, after it was announced on Monday that 1,400 jobs would be lost after the company was sold by administrators.
Bonmarché was part of troubled retailer Peacocks, and a question mark has lingered over the future of the store ever since Peacocks announced that it had entered administration earlier this month.
Although all eleven jobs are safe for now, store manager Jan Marsh said the news was bittersweet.
She said: “We are all delighted, but at the same time we are all feeling for the people who have not been so fortunate. It’s sad that colleagues in the region have lost their jobs.
“Still, it’s business as usual for us. It’s a difficult time for retail and we’re just thankful for having such a great customer following.”
