Friends join Mary to celebrate 40 years of happy hairdressing

THE champagne has been flowing this week for a Scarborough salon owner who is celebrating 40 years in business.

Mary Lyon left school aged 15 and took up an apprenticeship at Tymons in Falsgrave Road, before taking over Mary's Hair Stylist in Trafalgar Road in February 1970.

She still welcomes many of the customers whose hair she styled as a teenager through the salon's doors, and has invited them all back for a

glass of bubbly as she celebrates her ruby anniversary.

Ros Stephenson has been getting her hair done at Mary's salon for 37 years, and says it is her personal touch that has kept her coming back for the best part of four decades.

She said: "It's such a friendly place and we all know each other. Often getting your hair done is quite incidental to catching up on all the gossip.

"Mary will often have flowers, a cake and a card ready if it's someone's birthday. I've been going through all of my adult life and she has become such a good friend over the years."

Pat Fleming was one of Mary's first customers in 1970 and she makes the trip from Chepstow, in Wales, around three times a year to get her hair

done.

She said: "Mary is the only one who knows what to do with my curly hair! I moved away from Scarborough in 1952 but my mother lived in Trafalgar Road and a new hairdressers opened so I thought I'd give it a try.

"She has become more of a friend than a hairdresser and I'll be seeing her in April before the Scarborough Girls' High School reunion."

Mary said: "I'd worked in another salon in town and the opportunity came up to run my own so I plunged in. I've been very happy for 40 years – I don't know where the time has gone.

"Some people have been getting their hair done here since before I started. I've got some lovely customers that have become my friends.

"Over the years you become very close to your clients and soon become one big happy family who laugh together and sometimes cry together.

"I've seen a lot of changes, but what goes around comes around, and a lot of the fashions over the years have come back in again. I've tried

to keep up with the times as much as I can.

"I've eased off a little bit now but I'm still going strong. I don't want to retire, and I don't think my customers would let me. I think I'll be going into my dotage."
