Ex-Scarboro' student's top council job

A FORMER Scarborough student has started in the top job with North Yorkshire County Council.

Richard Flinton, 45, pictured, was officially appointed the authority's new chief executive at the start of this month.

He was previously the county council's corporate director of business and environmental services and succeeds John Marsden, who left in March, in his new role.

Mr Flinton, who has worked for the authority for more than 20 years, attended school and sixth form college in Scarborough, before going on to study economics at De Montfort University, Leicester.

His career with the county council has included periods as a trading standards officer and assistant chief executive. He has been director of business and environmental services, responsible for highways, waste disposal, economic development, countryside services and trading standards, since March 2008.

Speaking before his appointment was approved by county councillors he said: "I am extremely proud to have been nominated as chief executive. The coming years will be very challenging for local Government and I look forward to facing these challenges alongside all of the dedicated county councillors and staff."
