Asbestos protection
BUSINESSES in Scarborough are being urged by the British Safety Council to protect staff against asbestos.
The British Safety Council is urging businesses in Scarborough to ensure their workers are fully trained on the dangers of working with asbestos.
Asbestos still remains the single biggest cause of work-related death, figures show 58 men and women in Scarborough died from mesothelioma, a cancer caused by breathing in dangerous asbestos fibres, between 1981 and 2005.
Julie Nerney, British Safety Council chief executive said: "Any building constructed or refurbished before 2000 could contain asbestos. But asbestos is dangerous when disturbed.
"We have developed an asbestos awareness course aimed at those whose work could expose them to asbestos."
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently relaunched its 'Hidden Killer' campaign aimed at tradesmen who may not be aware of the dangers of asbestos exposure and who are working unprotected.
