AN ex-Scarborian is appealing for help from those who enjoyed the town's night life 30 years ago.
Graham Armitage, who now lives in Derbyshire, is collecting information about the former Penthouse nightclub, in St Nicholas Street, with the intention of creating a book about the club and the era in which it flourished.
Mr Armitage, who lived in Scarborough up until the age of 21, said: "In the 1970s I and many other Scarborians of a certain age used to regularly visit the club. For a time the club's reputation went well beyond Scarborough, particularly as a venue for then up and coming rock bands, and I want to produce a book about it.
"I started going around 1973 when the club very much had a strong hippyish ethic, even though hippies as such by then had largely had their time. Nonetheless, most of the staff and certainly the DJs went in for the full hippy regalia (very long hair, Afghan coats etc) as did most of the clientele, including myself.
"It was a disco mostly during the week but featured local bands and performers on Wednesdays, a rock band on a Friday and a folk band on a Sunday. The atmosphere was relaxed, laid back, and friendly. Above all it was great fun!
"I am appealing for information and memories, hopefully both from people involved in the venture and customers."

The History of the Penthouse:
The club, which lay above a former Lloyds Bank in St Nicholas Street, opened its doors for the first time in 1969. Part of the building dated back to 1870, and was once the old town hall, a ballroom, a cinema, and a billiards hall.
Before the Penthouse Scarborough business man Michael Corrigan originally opened a club on the site called Michael's.
In early 1969 Peter Adams, who lived in Whitby at the time, bought the club after spending a night in Scarborough. He was furious when he was turned away from the Scene nightclub because of what he was wearing, and jumped at the chance to open a rival club just around the corner.
Over the next ten years the Penthouse earned a reputation for having good, live music, and a free and easy atmosphere.
In 1979 Mr Adams sold the club to Iranian business man Mr Nasser Beiromi.
