SCARBOROUGH'S new £4.8 million Woodend centre is finally completed.
The keys to the former museum, once owned by the Sitwell family, are due to be handed over to its management team today.

The building will now be known as Woodend Creative Workspace.

A two-year refurbishment programme has resulted in 54 studio
office units, nine artists' studios, an incubator unit comprised of one and two-person workstations and a public exhibitions area complete with conference and meeting rooms.

The centre will eventually become home for up to 200 creative entrepreneurs from the Scarborough area.

A spokesman said: "Over half the building has been let prior to opening with around 20 businesses and individuals reserving space. Taking possession of they keys means we can now begin helping the tenants move in and finalise our plans for future marketing."

Objects displayed at the former Woodend Museum will continue to be stored at the centre and will be open for public viewing by appointment.

The house was the birthplace of Edith Sitwell in 1887 and played a strong role in the literary lives of Osbert, Edith and Sacheverell, until it was bought by the local authority in 1934.

Great, wonderful, fantastic, just what we need another SBC white elephant.

It's a pity the the details of the multi thousand pound annual subsidy from SBC was not mentioned.

This subsidy is to be paid untill the scheme comes into profit, knowing of SBCs track record this will never be achieved.

Another waste of council tax payers money on top of the exorbitant initial cost of £4.8 million.

I'm sure the Woodend Creative Workspace will be a great asset to the town but ... as a kid I used to *love* Woodend, a place of magic and inspiration. Can't help feeling we have lost more than we've gained here.

Can't agree more Eng like, my sis and I spent many happy hours wandering round, being guided by our dad, he was a mine of information on the exibits, especially the wildlife and geology section's.

In my opinion it is a great place and will be sadly missed, a terrible loss to the community and probably never be replaced.

This place full of wonderment and excitement with many live exhibits is just another sad loss to our once great town.

I too was taken around Woodend as a child by my brother and I loved it. I remember seeing the snakes and all the other stuffed animals. In time I took my son to see them all and he was delighted with everything on display.

In later years I went in with my husband and I must admit I felt the place seemed so run down in parts and had a feeling of decay about it.

I just hope the town can make some money back now the building has been renovated as it has cost a small fortune to do it all up.

This project is already creating dividends with regard to Scarborough image and how those looking from the outside view those of us who live on the coast, both in and around Yorkshire and further afield.

We're now being spoken of as being ahead of the game, innovative and moving forward, just like when The Woodend was first built....

Yes we all loved it when it was the museum, but maybe some are viewing those days through rose tinted glasses.....This refurb also permits people to wander in and out when they wish, maybe not everywhere without permission, but instead of visiting once or twice or now and again in your living memory....this time you'll be going at least once or twice a month! Now if that's not value for money I don't know what is. :D

Even if you're don't go into the building, some days you may just want to walk past the green space at the back(or is it the front?) where you can see artists creating things in their workspaces....Instead of poking terripins you'll be gorping at the caged painters and sculptures....much more ethical I'm sure you'll agree :D

Cheers!
