BOY George is among a number of stars lined up for Scarborough's renovated Open Air Theatre, the Evening News can reveal.

Entertainment group Apollo Leisure have also said that a "worldwide superstar" will top the bill at the opening night of the revamped £3.5 million theatre on Saturday July 24.

That will be the first live event at the historic venue for almost 25 years and the identity of the star will be revealed late next month.

The following week Boy George will appear with music legends including Midge Ure, Paul Young, Rick Astley and Nik Kershaw. The concert will feature Heaven 17, T'Pau, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Hazel O'Connor and Toyah.

They are set to grace the theatre's stage in an '80s Rewind concert on July 31, which will celebrate the re-development of the 6,500-seat venue. It last hosted entertainment in 1986 when the James Last Orchestra performed.

Stuart Tucker, Apollo project manager, said the revamped theatre will feature a new stage and seating and a permanent backstage area for artistes.

He said: "It is fantastic to see Europe's largest open-air theatre come back to life because it is a massive asset to the town and we are looking forward to putting on a great show. It is a beautiful setting, visually stunning and gives people in the town something to be proud of."

I truely hope this works for all our sakes. So 2 of the 12 large concerts are to be staged in the first 2 weeks, that leaves 10 more big concerts spread over 50 weeks unless of course the goal posts have been moved again but the information is confidential.

The OAT needs a dome otherwise what's the point unless you like getting wet, you can never rely on fine summer nights going by the weather we have had in the last few years?.
As #1 says and rightly so lets hope it works?.

As we all know even in summer Scarborough can be a little, well, "chilly" so will audiences be prepared to shiver their way through a concert if it coincides with one of our north easterlies....

Getting back to the Futurist debate, what Scarborough needs is an all purpose concert/conference venue like the Brighton Centre to attract big stars and big conferences and I'm not too sure if a re-vamp of the Futurist will serve this purpose

The 80's Rewind that is touring the country.

To be hoped it ain't raining on the night because if it is ticket purchase at the door then there will not be a full house for sure.

I just wonder if a crafty move will be that tickets are to be bought prior to the show day.

I note front page tonights SEN, "The scheme has been funded by S.C. which is borrowing £3.5 million to fund the renovation after taking it over from Benchmark Leisure, the company behind The Sands development. The council said the money will be repaid from the proceeds of the sale of apartments at The Sands".

The last report told us 76 of the apartments had been sold with some of the remainder possibly going soon and others being rented off as holiday accomodation.

Just when is this £3.5 million (plus interest) going to be repaid to the council considering 76 are already sold ? Surely the money should already be going into the council coffers.

I would have thought £3.5 million is some profit on 2 blocks of flats !!!.

As big as it maybe, 6500 seats will be pushing it to attract a "worldwide super star".

Have a little patience.....,

I take it they got planning permission for a dressing room then ?

Boy George will need a very big mirror with lots of lights around it.....

Why could this show not have been staged at the Futurist that Apollo Leisure abandoned years ago ?

Great news, I hope Apollo make a huge profit. They certainly deserve it, look at all the great things they've done for the town...

Exactly.
