ONE of Britain's top entertainers made a star appearance at a Rotary conference in Scarborough – though a traffic warden did his best to upstage the comic.
Tom O'Connor, who is known for his TV appearances in shows such as Name That Tune and Night Out at the London Casino, spoke at a black tie dinner at the Spa Complex last night.

Almost 1,000 Rotarians and partners from the West and North Ridings gathered to celebrate the group's 75th conference.

But as some arrived outside the Spa, they were met by a traffic warden who took the opportunity to give them a souvenir parking ticket.

An action-packed programme of events will continue throughout the weekend including a golf competition at South Cliff, presentations by guest speakers and cookery workshops.

A special 75th anniversary cake – baked and iced by Imaginative Icing in Falsgrave Road – was cut by district governor John Philip and his wife Chris and distributed to all the delegates.

Welcome to Scarborough - Here, have a ticket.

Can we have the parking bandit publicly named and shamed? He/she is only doing long term harm to the towns tourism industry.

Bring back the ducking stool!

Now we all know the real reason SBC sold the mayors limo, the council tax payers could not afford the fines.

The limo often seen outside the fancy hat shop on the corner of Huntriss Row and St Nicholas St, 30 seconds from the town hall, or parked outside fancy dress outfit suppliers town wide, or dare one say in the precinct outside SBCs head office otherwise known locally as the Cons club.

Now in line with SBC policy the mayor catches the bus.

One small credit to SBC at least they are consistent where motorists are concerned, disabled or able bodied they treat us all the same, ABOMINABLY.

#1 and 2, what on earth is your problem here? If these people are parked illegally they get a ticket, same as you and me and everyone else. Are you seriously arguing that Rotarians (whatever they are) should be exempt from parking restrictions, along with cafe owners, small shopkeepers, patrons of the Newcastle Packet, refuse wagons, parents who want to get their kids into St Augustines, etc etc? This town is already packed full with people who think they are exceptions to the rules and laws of the country and we don't need to import any more from Rotarians even if they are the "district governor" (get over yourself!)

Well said #3 - At least someone on here always manages to take a sensible approach. The guy deserved to be booked end of story. This is yet another non story and a further example of dear old ed's parking obsession.

#1 & #2 missed the point again but in fairness you usually do.

Sorry you feel everyone's opinions are always wrong and you two are always right, it must be wonderful to be perfect like you self opinionated pair.

#3 & #4,

Well, I am so sorry I have a differing view to your own. What a sad old town this would be if no one had a differing opinion to yours.

Just remember this: When a visitor is immediately awarded a parking ticket or is welcomed by a grinning parking bandit with a loaded pen - the chance of them returning is slim.

I think about the long term effect reports like these have on the reputation of the town, not just the possible gain of £30 to the councils coffee fund.

Thanks for your opinion, btw. Freedom of Speech is one privilige we still have in this country and I am glad you use it.

When we have these conferences at the Spa then the council should allocate parking areas where they are free from the wardens. The conferences bring big money into the town but things like this will most certainly put organisations off from returning. Once the word starts to spread then its the short end of the wedge.

I see no problem in allowing 'Designated' conference people from having a free park. They could through their organsiation and in liasion with SBC have a card issued to place in their car windows to show who they are part of.

To have from the start of the shops along towards the Spa as the area. It then defines a specific area. Out of the area back on the road then its a free for all.

I have to say that it reads as once again (though totally within the defined rules) we are 'Cherry Picking' specific known areas where a warden can fill his little black book with numbers of parking offenders without any long walks.

Get them out of their 'Comfort Zone' there are rich pickings to be had around Scarborough.

#7 Sense as always from Amaroo, but if everyone who attends a conference or other function at the Spa thinks (assumes even) they are exempt from parking restrictions we will very soon have nowhere for anyone else - visitor or local - to park, surely you can see that?

Post 8.

Agree with you latter comments.

Only thing I would say in defence, there has to be a line drawn in the sand somewhere. But that specific area only for conference people maybe a small way that does not get Scarborough the place to stay away from.

Only other suggestion is say the underground car park made available for Conference people only. Then at least they are all in one place. For the few days that conferences take place and normally out of season I think we could accomodate ?.

Amaroo I agree and as for your line in the sand thats fine, just as long as it is not a double one and yellow.
