A SCARBOROUGH woman has been robbed of her pension – at the age of 101.
Nellie Horseman yesterday spoke of her disgust at the incident after the burglar was jailed at York Crown Court.

The thief, Nina Catherall, had been charged with 88 other offences since 1992, some against other elderly victims.

Mrs Horseman, of High Street, Eastfield, said the attack had left her deeply upset. Catherall just walked into her home.

In light of the cowardly and despicable crime against a woman aged 101, the Evening News yesterday asked North Yorkshire Police in Northallerton to release a picture of Catherall, 32. It refused to do so.

But brave Mrs Horseman agreed to be identified – and to have her picture published.

She told of her relief that evil Catherall was sentenced to two and a half years in prison after taking the pensioner's purse containing £80 in October – all the elderly woman's money to pay bills for that week.
Catherall then splashed the money on cocaine.

Catherall, of Manham Hill, Eastfield, brazenly entered the pensioner's home and distracted the centenarian before helping herself to the purse.

The court was told Catherall had previously been charged with 88 other offences since 1992, including a number against elderly victims.

Mrs Horseman said: "I'm shocked she could do something like this to an older person. I don't normally like to see anyone go to prison at a young age but she came in and took my purse. I didn't know her. She just walked into my house while I was watching television and started talking to me about the Braeburn House care home."

This is another indication of the result of old peoples flats now being shared with young tenants. Even though they may not live there the ease of getting access can be done whilst visiting others, or pretending to.
There will be the same disasters when the old peoples' flats of Sandybed Court are made for mixed ages!

My deepest sympathy goes out to Nellie and well done for speaking out but perhaps some good may come from your courage and this story, if other senior citizen read this article perhaps it will encourage them to keep their doors locked and when answering the door use a security chain and ask the caller for ID.

As for NY Police, perhaps instead of constantly bleating about the low rate of crime in the Borough they would be better, as requested by the SEN, publicising and issuing a photograph of this 88 conviction recidivist and making the more vulnerable in our society aware of the despicable vermin that live in their midst.

As for the courts that give a two and half year sentences for this dispicle crime there is little wonder that the vast majority of law abiding citizens call this 'The criminals justice act' the law is an ass.

English like wot she is meant to be spoke,

Well, I'm sure someone will be able to supply the SEN with a pic of Ms Catherall - given that she has been found guilty of 89 offences it's unlikely she'll have many friends in the town.

Must agree with #4, two and half years for what seems like a lifetime of crime is far too lenient.

I'm sorry to hear that this has happened to Mrs Horseman and wish her all the best for the future.
What are the judiciary system thinking about ? 88 offences under his belt already why on earth is he out on the streets it obvious that this coke head is never going to change his ways. Lock him up and let the prisoners dish out their own justice on him but he should never be allowed to pollute our streets again.

#8 Its a male offender, not that that makes any difference. Let's hope the two and a half year sentence means that and that she is not out in 18 months with a degree. Wonder what the outcomes of her other crimes against older people were??, a spot of community service perhaps.

In my view the main crime here is that this woman was out on the streets in spite of having these 88 other offences to her name - and heaven knows how many others she'd got away with.

I hope the Evening News finds a picture and publishes it. Not now, when this evil woman is safe in a cosy jail, but when she gets out.
