TWO Scarborough secondary schools have produced sensational turnarounds in their GCSE results in just one year.
George Pindar Community Sports College leads the way, achieving a 100 per cent pass rate with all 148 students who sat the exams achieving five or more A-star and A to C grades.

The result is expected to be one of the most improved in the country today. Last year just 43 per cent of Pindar pupils achieved the top grades.

The results, released today by the Department for Education, also show that Scalby School, which shocked the town by having to be put into 'special measures' by Ofsted last year, had 85 per cent of pupils gaining the top grades – an increase of 29 per cent.

Schools Secretary Ed Balls was today among the first to issue his personal congratulations to Eastfield's Pindar.

He said: "My sincere congratulations to all the teachers and pupils at George Pindar School.

"Their performance demonstrates the impact that National Challenge funding can have on standards in a school focused on improvement, and will encourage other schools striving to better their performance."

Pindar has also achieved 52 per cent of pupils gaining five A* to C grades, including maths and English – that's an improvement of 24 per cent.

Hugh Bellamy, Pindar headteacher, said: "We are excited and thrilled. We have more than doubled our student passes for five GCSEs.

"What is most rewarding is that the success has been the result of a five-year programme of developing the right culture, deep learning, student voice and tailored one-one tuition for students, linked to curriculum diversity.

"Deep learning has been one of the most innovative practices we have implemented enabling our talented students in year eight, nine and ten to maximise their potential and take their GCSEs early."

Just skim over the amazing achievement of the body of head teachers and teaching staff at Scalby school for helping the students get such a good result why not.

Considering what the prospects of the year 11 students were before, I think their methods have been proven....

A baffling article.

Pindar has a "100 per cent pass rate with all 148 students who sat the exams achieving five or more A-star and A to C grades", whereas last year "just 43 per cent of Pindar pupils achieved the top grades". The implication being that the increase is from 43 per cent to 100 per cent, depending of course on whether my assumption that "A to C grades" are the same as the "top grades" is correct. However we're subsequently told that Pindar "achieved 52 per cent of pupils gaining five A* to C grades including maths and English", which would of course be a 9 per cent increase. Sorry, but this reads like someone trying to be clever with statistics, and leaves people like me totally baffled.

Or maybe that is what "deep learing" is about? (Come on, don't introduce these glib phrases into the article without explaining them!)

The results from Scalby appear at first glance to have vindicated the new regime, so well done to the new headteacher and hope he keeps up the good work.

I echo the comments about Scalby School - well done to all involved. I also know that Scalby did not just get the second highest percentage of A*-C at 85% in the town beaten only by Pindar, (don't know about Scarborough College) but 61% of Scalby School students achieved both English and Maths which I believe is a higher percentage than any comprehensive school in Scarborough including Pindar, and also higher than Filey. What a turnabout for a school in 6 months.

What about all the other schools in the Scarborough area that received their results today?
Don't they deserve a mention?
What about the schools with consistently good results
i.e St Augustines and Graham School.
Having being a student myself at another school i know it is hard work to achieve such grades, and the hard work the teachers and headteachers have to put in to achieve these outstanding results...
Surely the other schools deserve some praise, or even just a mention?

Cliffhanger,

Congratulations to all the schools who achieved impressive results. To post 4, the difference, I think, is, the 100% pass rate this year (and the 43% last year) is for 5 A*-C GCSEs which includes all subjects. The 52% number also mentioned is the number getting 5 A*-C GCSEs, of which 2 are Maths and English (this is the one schools get judged the most on I think according to another news story)

Thanks #7, and apologies for the ignorance on my part. Would have been better if the article had explained this a bit more clearly though.

Agree with #6, why no mention of other schools, or are the SEN "saving" news from one day to the next, hoping no one will notice when they print Thursday's news on Friday?

Once again, sincere congratulations to all concerned.
