STUDENTS at a Scarborough college have been urging people to protect themselves against harmful rays during the recent sunny weather.
The group, who are studying an access course at Yorkshire Coast College, wanted to warn others about the dangers of UV light after learning that two of their fellow students had suffered with skin cancer.

The group set up the awareness campaign as part of the health care module in the course.

Student, Lisa Kelly, said: “From our research we discovered that the 16-24 year olds are now at an increased risk of skin cancer in our country.

“So we decided to do our promotion inside the college where we could reach the young people.

“We had an excellent response and we gave out lots of freebees and lots of information leaflets and we found people were very receptive.

“We especially tried to target the young male students as they probably have more sun exposure over the years than females, because they play sports and more often work outside.”

The group urged people to check their skin and moles frequently and to see their GP immediately if they were worried or concerned.

Student Lisa Kelly said: “The day went very well and the group would like to thank Boots for the free protection products. Also Wilkinson’s for their kind donation, and Boyes for helping with supplying stationery for the stand.”
