SPEEDING motorists in the Scarborough area came under the spotlight as part of an ongoing road safety campaign.
The multi-agency operation targeted offending drivers on the A165 Reighton Bypass.

Officers from North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire County Council, Scarborough Council, North Yorkshire Ambulance Service and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and
paramedics were involved in the latest part of Operation Siren.

And drivers who were caught going faster than 60mph were given the option of a hard-hitting educational presentation by road safety officers instead of getting an endorsable fixed penalty notice.

In total, 11 drivers opted for the anti-speeding presentation and five of these were transit van drivers who were all surprised to learn that their vehicles were only permitted to do 50mph and not 60mph.

Three drivers were handed endorsable fixed penalty notices for greatly exceeding the speed limit and one motorist who was driving at 82mph and overtaking on double white lines being reported for summons.

TC Dave Burlingham, who co-ordinated Thursday's operation, said: "All the partners involved in Operation Siren believe this is an effective way of highlighting the true dangers of speeding and getting the message across that speed limits are in place purely for safety reasons.

"The five transit van drivers learnt a valuable lesson from the operation and I hope other van drivers consult their highway code manual to ensure they understand the speed restrictions in place when driving a vehicle of this type."

As well as speeding, officers handed out a fine for a hand-held mobile phone offence and one motorist who was stopped had no insurance or driving licence and was reported for summons with the vehicle being seized.

Summons were also issued to five motorists who overtook on the double white lines.

Operation Siren activities are staged locally throughout the county during the year. It directly links in with the 95 Alive York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership, as well as North Yorkshire Police's ongoing road safety enforcement campaign Operation Anvil.

I expect white van man and his mates will be on soon moaning about being unfairly targetted. Before you do, let me reply that there are too many van drivers in this town who think they can drive as fast and as dangerously as they like - and can park anywhere they want.

There is a reason why these vans are not allowed to do 60 mph, and anyone who has been tailgaited by one will be perfectly well aware what that reason is.

Not sure though why we need "North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire County Council, Scarborough Council, North Yorkshire Ambulance Service and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and paramedics", surely this is a simple Police matter?

Now that the powers that be have done this, why don't they do something about the brain dead boy racers who think they have the authority to use the town centre as a race track, and hit them where it hurts, give them a minimum of at least 9 points on their licence, that would make them think twice about 'posing' around the town.

we're getting there, slowly but surely little by little, one day all the rogues and fly by nights will be subject to the same laws and punishments that exist in the rest of the country

The Reighton By-pass is a remarkable piece of road for this area.
It is the ONLY one that does not resemble a patchwork quilt.

Has anyone else noticed how many holes, undulations, patches and ridges the roads around here have? Stepney Road heading out of town is a bit like a minefield. Seamer Road is worse. Why isn't part of the £30 million being allocated to making the roads smoother and all of the same colour instead of being frittered away on needless traffic lights?

As for the van drivers speeding, uninsured and using mobiles - throw the book at them.

I must agree with comment 3,

Not sure though why we need "North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire County Council, Scarborough Council, North Yorkshire Ambulance Service and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and paramedics", surely this is a simple Police matter.

Quite right, this list makes it sound more like a local authority jamboree, why did they not include a representative from Jobcentre Plus, after all when white van man loses his license and his job they will be needed to help.

However i can understand the partisipation of the Ambulance Service and the Fire Brigade, after all it is them that usually end up picking up the pieces when these morons crash, more often than not killing or maiming law abiding road users.
