A LANDLORD, who runs two pubs in Scarborough, says it is crucial that facilities are provided for smokers – or businesses could go up in smoke.
Mick Mancrief hopes to provide facilities for people to light up at both The Turk’s Head in Eastborough and The Ship in Falsgrave Road.

Mr Mancrief said: “I think pubs will find it difficult to survive if they don’t have somewhere for smokers.

“At my pub at least 50 per cent of my customers are smokers.”

Mr Mancrief has applied to Scarborough Council for permission to install a pull-out canopy when it is raining.

“I’ve got a big beer garden and I intend to have two tables in a smoking area,” said Mr Mancrief.

“There will be room for another seven tables in the beer garden for those who don’t want to light up.”

Mr Mancrief is planning to spend £2,000 on the new facilities for smokers.

“I am also running The Ship pub for Enterprise Inns,” added Mr Mancrief.

“The company intends to spend £14,000 on a big revamp of the beer garden which will include climbing frames, slides and swings for children.

“Part of the conservatory will be converted to provide a smoking area.”

l Red Nose Day events at the Turk’s Head recently raised around £550. for Comic Relief.
