WORK on a £500,000 skate park and play area in Scarborough's North Bay is set to get under way this year.
The park is just one of a series of improvements taking place in Royal Albert Gardens which overlook Marine Drive.

Phase one of the development of Royal Albert Park, which included path reconstruction, seating and signage, vegetation clearance and installation of a picnic area and an information point, is now complete.

These changes were completed on time and on budget at a cost of £201,456.

The second part, which will cost £500,000, is now being designed and will include the relocation and expansion of Hairy Bob’s Skate Park.

Funding for the second phase is still being secured. Scarborough Council agreed to give £94,000 from the Capital Contingency Reserve – which was also allocated for the first phase.

Sport England has indicated that £60,000 will be made available and a further £27,414 is to be raised through developments in Marlborough Street and on the site of the former Alton Hotel in Blenheim Terrace, which will be turned into apartments.

The skate park is being developed in partnership with local young people and those involved have formed a community group, Skate for Scarborough, to help design the new park.

The children’s play area will be created on the site of the old skateboard park. This is being part-funded by the Big Lottery Fund.

The Friends of Royal Albert Park has worked with the council throughout this project. Chairman Rob Hobson said: “It’s going well, it’s been a long job but we’re getting there.”

A progress report will be presented to Scarborough Council’s projects and partnerships overview and scrutiny committee on Monday.
