Published Date: 30 August 2008
A VITAL Scarborough link road is to be closed for almost two months.
Queen Margaret's Road between Filey Road and Mere Lane will be shut from Wednesday for slope stabilisation works, aimed at preventing it from cracking up.

It is the latest in a seemingly endless catalogue of road chaos to hit Scarborough motorists as a result of the new Osgodby bypass and the forthcoming park and ride scheme.

Scarborough Council's head of technical services John Riby said he recognised the closure was "likely to inconvenience a considerable number of motorists" but said it was necessary to safeguard the park and ride route.

However, businesses in and around the nearby Queen Margaret's Industrial Estate, have been quick to hit out.

Kevin Atkinson, of City Electrical Factors, said: "This is going to cause a lot of inconvenience. Not only does it cause problems around Queen Margaret's Road, but what will happen to all the traffic that is already backing up Queen Margaret's because of the new road system? It is just going to add to Scarborough's traffic problems."

Branch director of MKM, Brian Flintoft, said: "Seamer Road is bad enough at the moment. Traffic is now piling back to Musham Bank or further – this is only going to make it worse."

He said he and the other retailers already had a problem with the mini- roundabout being removed.

However, the town's ambulance base is unlikely to be affected by the works due to special contingency plans.

Ian Walton, A&E Operations Director for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said: "We are in negotiation with the contractors to place a stand-by point at the other side of the roadworks. This will have facilities for the ambulance crews and should help prevent any difficulties in reaching the east side of the town."

The engineering work will be carried out on in the area of Parnell's Wood.

Mr Riby said: "This area has suffered slope instability which will in due course affect the carriageway. The earth movement arises from groundwater conditions which have already affected the sub-base of the carriageway."

I gave up my part time delivery job as I am sick to death of hardly making any money when I take into account motoring costs, and the constant road works and traffic lights even 100 yards or so.

This really is the last straw, another expensive fiasco with the park and ride scheme, payed for by us the tax payers.

This council are just not listening to the electorate, regardless of overwhelming public opinion, they carry on with schemes we the public do not want, we did not want the park and ride, we did not want the trafic lights and we most certainly did not want the utter chaos being caused in our own town, by these demented town hall mandarins, who by all their actions are severely damaging the economic growth they were elected to support.

The plain fact is we have lost control of our democracy and our town to the jobsworths.

Its about time SBC listened to us. The town traffic system is a disgrace. The council seem to want to create gridlock rather than ease traffic. Not all of us can rely on buses or other transport.

Unfortunately this council seems to do what it wants when it wants with impunity.

Every where you go there is traffic lights these rather than help traffic flow in most cases, create traffic jams, a recently example of this is Valley bridge lights. We are now getting lights on both ends on Queen Margaret's road, several on Filey road, Throxenby lane/Green lane.

There is not a day that doesn't go by that some one is complaining about this. SBC when are you going to wake up and listen for God sake you are ruining this town, you are a utter disgrace and not fir for purpose.

A new piece of info has just come my way and in probability will answer the question just what are SBC up to causing all this congestion.

Grants are now available to councils from the Dept of Transport, the grants are to cover the cost of a consultant based investigation and report into congestion.

First of all the town/city must actually have congestion, SBC by their own actions have more than adequately fullfilled this first criterior.

Now they can apply for a grant for yet another consultant based survey in the town, following on from the survey, having proved conggestion exists, they can apply to introduce congestion charging in the town.

Not content with collecting millions in parking fee's and of course the obligatory fines for miscreant motorist, they can now squeeze even more out of the hard pressed motorist with congestion charging.

Cause the congestion and expand the town hall coffers even further with the cogestion charges and who said SBC are doing nothing for us?.

SBC do not think things through. How are drivers able to turn right from Avenue Victoria? Or now able to get back in to town from Currys? These are just a few instances of bad planning

Harrogate council got rid of there lights which we inherited. The few times lights at Falsgrave or the railway station or Victoria road/northway traffic has flown freely abet slowly. Traffic lights DO NOT WORK

We need some one from the government to help us and make this council listen. I have lived in this town for 47 years and I am so fed up over the last few years because of the way this town is being run I feel like leaving.

We pay our council tax and we want this council to take not we pay your wages you dont do us any favours, as your employee we want you to look after our interests, and not as you currently do, do whatever suits you.

If you are unable too carry out that task fine go

I have known for quite a while that this work had to be done. I also realised that everyone would be up in arms when it was announced.

However this work does need to be done to stabalize this road, as it takes more traffic each year.

There is also a lot of water that runs off the Mount and this must cause problems and the road if left as it is will just get worse.

As for all the extra traffic lights, word's fail me and I don't think for one minute we need them all.

I agree with what has been written, that when the light's are off,the traffic runs without any problems.

If thing's go on like this more businesses will leave the town.

Lady Taurus, I hear what your saying, many business have already left Scarborough, and many more are going to do so, Scarborough now has a bad name amongst the business community

I was sad to leave Scarborough, I had to make 10 people redundant due to relocation, which when they have do and excellent job is not nice

SBC need to consider the harm they are doing to business and its taxpayers
