SCARBOROUGH has been named as one of the most popular destinations for a romantic break in the UK.
The resort has romped home in sixth position for couples wanting a love break.

The findings were the result of a recent survey by the hotel reservation company HRS.com, in which more than 1,000 adults were asked where they would choose to spend a
happy weekend.

London topped the poll, with southern coastal towns such as Newquay and Bournemouth also in the Top 10. Scarborough's high placing was backed by couples we spoke to who said they enjoyed sharing the scenery and sunsets in particular.

Matt Calvert, of Ebberston, was pictured with Scarborough girl Becky Fox while on their first date. He said: "I can see why visitors
would find Scarborough romantic. There are some wonderful views around town with the beaches and the castle, which look especially nice on an evening when the sun is setting."

We asked couples visiting Scarbor-ough whether they think the town deserved its placing in the top 10 list.

Neil and Pauline Miller travelled from Rugby to spend a few days on the coast. Mr Miller said: "I think Scarborough is romantic, it has a certain character. We especially like the North Bay and up on the Esplanade. You can find lots of little places to be romantic in."

Paul and Val England, from Derbyshire, are regular Scarborough visitors. Mrs England said: "We love coming to Scarborough, we visit quite a lot. I would agree that it is romantic. Sitting on the seafront or up at the castle there are some very romantic views."

Second-time visitors Robert and Susan Sillett had travelled from Diss in Norfolk. Mr Sillett said: "My parents come to Scarborough a lot. We came with them last year and like it so decided to come back this year by ourselves. Parts of Scarborough are definitely romantic, once you get away from the busy town centre and head to the North Bay, or up to the castle. We would both like to come back."

However, love was not in the air for Lyle and Susan Shane. Mr Shane said: "I would not say it is romantic. We have just come here for a nice break, to get away. We came when the children were little and fancied coming back. It is just somewhere nice to come. It is certainly better than Blackpool. We live closer to Blackpool but we would much rather come here."

One major Scarborough hotel was not surprised at the outcome. David Chambers, operations manager at the Crown Spa Hotel, in Esplanade, said: "We do get a lot of couples here, without a doubt. Because of the leisure facilities we have on offer here people do come for a romantic break. We offer packages for couples with champagne and flowers, which has proved to be popular. We definitely get more couples than families, especially with the weekend trade."

The survey also found that a third of those polled believed summer was the best time for a romantic weekend break.
