IN A sensational and dramatic triumph, Scarborough was last night crowned the champions of Europe as the most enterprising town among 25 nations.
The prestigious and historic accolade by the European Commission was made in the impressive heavily-chandeliered grand hall of the Zofin Palace in Prague shortly before midnight.

The award was the final announcement of the evening, with other winners including Sweden and Spain.

But it was Scarborough which clinched the top slot to cheers from the packed crowd of nearly 400 people from two dozen countries.

Gunter Verheugen, the European Commission vice-president, presided over the ceremony and said: "There were 350 entries at national level with 47 countries represented at European level. They are a model for others."

He added, before Scarborough councillor and former mayor Derek Bastiman took to the red-carpeted stage to receive a huge glass trophy: "The event is to exchange best practice and to learn from each other."

Scarborough regeneration efforts of recent years was showcased as an
example for other countries to adopt, particularly in the way in which the council had encouraged and triggered renaissance developments by building business and networking partnerships.

Scarborough impressed the Enterprising Britain judges with the town's Renaissance Project, including the £4.8million Woodend Creative Workspace, the new harbour pontoons project, and the Rotunda, which recently underwent a £4.4 million facelift.

The Scarborough presentation showed that, with help also from renaissance projects including the Sands in North Bay and the revamped Star Map in South Bay, seaside towns could succeed despite the loss of traditional industries and fishing.

The town was given the Grand Jury award as the overall winner, beating stiff competition from countries including Spain, Belgium, France, Germany and Sweden.

Scarborough had already been judged the regional and UK winner for enterprising transformation, and was representing the country at the European finals in the Czech republic yesterday evening.

"I am so proud for Scarborough," said Cllr Bastiman in receiving the award at the 19th century palace on an island in the historic city of Prague.

With him was John Burroughs, representing Scarborough Borough Council's regeneration projects, Cllr Derek Bastiman, the council's regeneration representative, Nick Taylor, urban renaissance manager, David Archer, strategic director, and Andrew Clay, director of the new Woodend creative centre, which was part of the successful submission.

Cllr Bastiman added to the audience of hundreds of European-wide delegates: "I am immensely proud of my town, where I have lived all my life. It is a place very dear to my heart. It is a town I would encourage you all to visit. So many people have contributed to this success."
He named the colleagues who undertook the trip for the awards, which were part of the first European-wide recognition week for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Among the first people to give reaction were Robert Goodwill MP who said: "Congratulations are due to all those concerned. It's a magnificent success. Scarborough is well and truly on the European map."

Peter Wilkinson, of the renaissance and town teams, added: "This is a defining moment in history. It's almost unbelievable. It shows the fruits of partnership between public and private sectors."

Mr Archer said: "This is the best accolade that Scarborough could be given. It is the culmination of years of vision, planning and hard work."

Cllr Tom Fox, council leader, said: "I am thrilled and delighted at this news, and I personally would like to congratulate all those concerned in achieving this marvellous result."

Well done to all involved. It all makes sense when you read the reasons that the award was given for.

Keep up the good work and please sort out the other problems such as the park and ride and the town will continue to flourish and pick up awards. Please listen to the public when they are been constructive because many of us do care and are immensely proud of our town.

What a load of bull from goodwill, however he is rather busy with a little matter in whitby, the nature of the meeting he is attending is the towns people of Whitby want their council to be totally independant from the ENTERPRISING SBC.

Great news if your not SBC and Enterprising Scarboroughs biggest supporter and MP for Sca and Whitby, for the time being.

It's great for the town to win the award, and as said above, the reasons can be seen when reading the article properly. However, just after entry to this competition, jobs started to be lost in the area on a massive scale, including those of colleagues of mine. I am embarassed that our enterprise team are smiling and happy about this. The Business Park is nothing but empty fields, unemployment is rising, no significant new busineses (or enterprises) are opening up. Put simply, it is great we have won it, but the timing is awful!

Well said. Winning the award is great but the people concerned should certainly not rest on their laurels. Their aim should be to fill up the business park and get people in respectable employment. Upgrading the A64 would be a great leap forward as companies can get cheap reclaimed land in the M62 corridor with greater accessability. Until then they must persevere.

Is it April 1st ?

Can someone actually inform me as to what this so called 'prestigious' award will do for Scarborough as a town. The first 'Enterprise' award was going to bring jobs and business into Scarborough. It hasn't

The back slapping 'Enterprise Gang' will be in their element. These people have no interest in Scarborough, Their main interest are their businesses and to get on high profile committees, if being on a committee brings Scarborough into the spotlight then that's a bonus.

It may well see 5 more 'Freemen of the Town' enthroned !

It begs belief as to how Scarborough was even nomintated and considered in the first place. We have a North Side that is a vast wasteland, we have a Mere and surrounding area a vast wasteland along with a Futurist theatre that has been recommended to be demolished. All Council owned. Obviously the areas commented on like The Sands were not visited by the judges or whoever.

Peasholm Park now relies on the goodwill of the public to maintain it as with Dean Road cemetery.

We have a Park & Ride transport system that begs belief and does not and never will work. We have a traffic light system that brings the town to a standstill most days.

The roads in and around Scarborough are worse than a third world country.

Yet we win this so called 'prestigious' award !!!!

It begs belief as to what the other entrants were like.

Now watch the council tax payers money be wasted in Enterprisingly spectacular style.

Starting with the welcome back from Prague party.

Next the congratulations well done party.

Followed by the Enterprise gang award party.

All culminating in the biggest back slapping party ever.

All thanks to the mugs that voted us in and give us all their hard earned brass to waste on our parties.

I rather the suspect the rest of the continent is blissfully unaware of their defeat in this "sensational and dramatic triumph".

Did any of the judges actually visit Scarborough?

The timing must rankle for people who are struggling in the recession, but Scarborough is hardly alone in that. In fact, the award is a very useful tool for businesses to promote themselves and help Scarborough get out of the recession - no other place in the UK has this advantage. Let's use it!
