A warning about Scarborough Council's finances was given at yesterday's cabinet meeting.
Introducing a report that says the council may have to find £490,000 from its reserves to balance the budget for this financial year, Cllr Jane Kenyon, the cabinet's new finance boss, said: "If you think this one's difficult, brace yourself for next year."

Several council departments have failed to meet expected levels of income generation, including the indoor leisure service which is £138,000 down on its target, mainly as a result of fewer people using the sports centre and the indoor pool at the North Bay, and the council's investment income which is down to £300,000 compared with £1 million last year.

The authority's financial director, Nicholas Edwards, said that the situation is not as bad is it could be because the authority had made provision for the shortfall such as business rates, which are expected to be down £250,000.

A drop in investment income was also planned for.

Why wasn't that warning given prior to Councillors being asked to decide on the £3.5m loan for the OAT? A review of that decision should be demanded immediately with the option that either Benchmark or Apollo resume the financing of building and running this suspect project, as and when they are in a financial position to carry out the work required. If our income generation levels are down, then where is the money to come from to service further borrowing by the Council in the interests of private concerns?

Ive mentioned it before I know but.......
The Harbour department is heavily in the red, yet intend to make a profitable speedboat operator redundant, despite all of the present operators expressing a desire to carry, plus considerable interest from would be operators too.
To throw away a revenue to the harbour dept of some
£8-10,000 per year is utter madness.

Exactly what 'Indoor Leisure Service' do we have that are not subsidised and operative ? And, that does not take into account anything in Whitby or Filey.

Is there any 'Indoor Leisure Service' that has a profit return ? I doubt it.

The Futurist is subsidised, Tony Peers at the Spa is subsidised and we subsidise the SJT which has nothing to do with us the council tax payer. That is a private theatre that like the Open Air Theatre will never and can never go into profit.

"Cllr Jane Kenyon, the cabinet's new finance boss, said: "If you think this one's difficult, brace yourself for next year."

That really gives us a boost I must say !!!!

Wonder if this is of some interest....

.......... if it can happen in Doncaster it should be able to happen
anywhere !!

A maverick mayor elected after promising to slash council spending, clear
the streets of yobs and ditch politically correct services is the
torch bearer for how towns should be run.

On his first morning as Mayor of Doncaster in South Yorkshire ,
Peter Davies cut his salary from £73,000 to £30,000
then closed the council’s newspaper
for "peddling politics on the rates".
Now three weeks into his job, Mr Davies is pressing ahead with plans he
hopes will see the number of town councillors cut from 63 to just 21, saving taxpayers £800,000.

Mr Davies said:
"If 100 senators can run the United States of America ,
I can’t see how 63 councillors are needed to run Doncaster ".

He has withdrawn Doncaster
from the Local Government Association and the
Local Government Information Unit, saving another £200,000. Mr Davies said,
"They are just talking shops".

" Doncaster is in for some serious untwinning.
We are twinned with probably nine other cities around the world
and they are just for people to fly off
and have a binge at the council’s expense".

The mayor’s chauffeur-driven car has also been axed by Mr Davies
and the driver given another job. Mr Davies, born and bred in Doncaster, swept to power in the May election with 24,244 votes as a candidate for the English Democrats, a party that wants tight immigration curbs,
an English Parliament and a law forcing every public building
to fly the flag of St. George.

He has promised to end council funding for Doncaster ’s International
Women’s Day, Black History Month and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and
Transgender History Month.
He said,
"Politicians have got completely out of touch with what people want.

"We need to cut costs. I want to pass on some savings
I make in reduced taxes
and use the rest for things we really need,
like improved childre

Could this latest, not unexpected, news be attributed to the recession, a phenomenon that SBC councillors are in complete and irrational denial of.

According to SBC “We are bucking the national trend” well now that this backslappers and enterprise gang inspired myth has been blown clear out of the water, what will they be telling us next, perhaps words to the effect that the “councillors have the matter in hand due in no small part to their financial prudence and expertise”, god help us.

Due to the impending election next year I doubt even SBC will be daft enough to try a massive hike in council tax but be wary, be very wary, in 2012 after being re-elected you can be sure SBC true to past form will hit us all with a double whammy the like of which has never been seen before.

With the prospect of a Conservative win in the national election, god save us, this council will have no compunction about massively cutting services and hiking taxes to squander on their madcap master plans and special relationship cronies.

Cllr Jane Kenyon, the cabinet's new finance boss, said: "If you think this one's difficult, brace yourself for next year" and indeed you should.

If you believe that after years of financial imprudence and mismanagement SBC are suddenly going to receive divine intervention and resolve these problems, most of their own making, then you are in all probability as deluded as they most certainly are.

Sorry.....

improved children’s services".
Mr Davies has received messages
from well wishers across the country and
abroad as news of his no-nonsense approach spreads.

Same here its about time long over due

People who use our money were tightly held to account.

The maverick mayor is just what Scarborough needs.

Stop wasting our money or silly surveys that never go any where, cut the amount of waste, cut the amount of councillors, get rid to the political unwanted NYCC paper and above all end final salary pensions, it is not affordable
