Published Date: 17 July 2008
SCARBOROUGH Council has begun the next stage of its public consultation regarding British Telecom's plans to pull the plug on 21 rural telephone boxes in the borough.
The move has caused concern among parish councils and Scarborough MP Robert Goodwill, who has raised fears that areas without a mobile phone signal could be left without a public phone box in the event of an emergency.

The council has announced it is provisionally objecting to 17 of the proposed removals and will now carry out a further consultation period before it makes its final recommendations.

A council spokesman said the authority had received strong objections to the removal of the payphone in High Street, Burniston, adding: "It is considered locally that the phone box is little used now because it has been converted into a card-only facility and these are not locally available.

"The local community would prefer it to be converted back to a coin and card facility, so enabling more people to use the facility."

It is also objecting to the removal of a phonebox in Southfield, Reighton Gap, because of its isolated location where mobile phone signals cannot be relied upon, and a payphone in Manor View Road, Lebberston, due to a lack of alternative facilities.

The council has received no objections to the removal of phone boxes in West Bank, Osgodby Lane and Suffield.

BT can remove a payphone without consultation if another is situated within 400 metres.

The company claims phone usage has halved in the past two years with the result that 60 per cent of the public payphones base is now unprofitable.

It also says calls are still declining at 20 per cent year on year, with 10 per cent of phones making less than one call a year.

Any further comments or objections to the plans should be sent to Jo Ireland, Community Partnerships manager, Scarborough Borough Council, Regeneration and Planning Services, St Nicholas Street, Scarborough, YO11 2HG or emailed to jo.ireland@scarborough.gov.uk

im glad the council have got nothing better to do with there time than objecting on whether a phone box comes down or not, also there point about mobiles having no signal, the fact is even when you do have no siganl you can still always make a emergency call from your mobile, they cant even argue there case with valid reasons, shocking yet again

Love that benny - grow up!! What if your gran, mum or dad etc. didn't have a mobile. Some people don't you know! This is another shocking example of the stripping away of a vital public service. It has become clear in recent years that BT have no desire to keep these phones especially as "they" have been converted to cards only when the local shops in the area don't even sell them - or know where to get them from.

The telephone boxes in rural areas must be kept. These telephones can make a difference between life and death, to anyone who needs the emergency services.

The SBC are doing the right thing in challenging BT and our MP agrees with them.

Not everyone owns a mobile, or knows how to use one.

I am also alarmed to read a great many of these phone boxes only take cards. Not many people will have cards or know where to purchase them from.

Enforcer

with the cost of petrol nowadays i would be amazed if somebody owned a car which seems to cost hundreds of pounds a week to run yet didn t have a mobile phone which cost a little as £5 nowadays.

BRITISH TELECOM are running a business, not a charity and if these boxes are not making money then they have to go.

well seems though you feel so strongly on the subject gary glit and enforcer, why do you not suggest that the phone boxs can be goverment/council funded, then when your council tax bill goes up 10% to cover the costs see if you are still in favour.

i am in agreement with 'love that benny'. who can afford extra costs with the way the economy is at the moment? people seem to forget that businesses dont do things to be nice, they do it for the money. would it not be a better idea to increase mobile phone signal and move towards the future rather than sticking in the past and keeping phone boxes??
