HEAVY snowfall hit the region again today causing school and road closures.
More than two centimetres had fallen before 8am.

East Coast trains has reduced its rail services between Leeds and London Kings Cross and they are now running hourly.

Schools closed include:

In Scarborough:, Graham School, Hinderwell Community Primary School, Raincliffe School, St Augustine's Secondary School and Wheatcroft Primary School.

Filey Infant and Nursery School, Sherburn Primary, Hunmanby Primary, East Ayton Primary School, Hertford Vale Church of England Primary School, Staxton and Hackness Church of England School were also closed.

In Ryedale: Kirkbymoorside Primary, Amotherby Primary School, Langton Primary, Malton, Pickering Infant and Nursery School, Settrington Primary School, Weaverthorpe Primary School, Welburn Primary School, Luttons Primary at West Lutton.

Driving conditions deteroriated quickly on the A64 as snow contined to fall.

Roads between Hunmanby and Muston were treacherous with some motorists struggling to get through.

Police closed all the roads leading to Oliver's Mount in Scarborough. Staxton Hill was closed and Ramshill in Scarborough was passable with extreme care.

Forecasters are predicting one of the coldest winters in 100 years, with temperatures dipping as low as -16C in some parts of the country.

Snow, ice and frosts look set to continue with no let-up in the cold snap until mid-January. Some experts have also said the second half of the month could be even colder.

Evening News weatherman Richard Thompson said: "I don't remember any spells in recent years when it's been so cold for so long.

"And it looks set to be particularly cold over the weekend."
