A FORMER driving examiner is back on the road after setting up his own driver training business.
Brian Cook, 57, of Filey Road, Gristhorpe, hopes to offer driver training at all levels with a focus on fleet driving and teaching people about a new law.
He plans to advise and train companies about The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, which means organisations can be prosecuted if a safety failure is the cause of work-related deaths.
Mr Cook will send a letter and paper presentation to companies across Scarborough to make them aware of the new law and is offering to give them a power-point presentation.
He said: “I want to pass on my skills and expertise to try and improve the quality of general driving in this area. I’m going to train instructors as well as anybody who wants to learn to drive.”
Mr Cook started his career in road safety in 1977 as a driving instructor and was a driving examiner for the Driving Standards Agency for 20 years.
For the last four years he was a staff instructor at the DSA Training and Development Centre in Cardington, Bedfordshire, where he trained examiners at different levels.
Asked why he has decided to return to driver training, Mr Cook said: “I think 20 years is enough to be on the examining side.
“I’m going back to what I did 30 years ago but in that time I’ve gained an absolute wealth of experience.
“There’s more required of everyone these days and it’s a stricter examination process. I’ve had to sit all of these exams myself. The point I would stress is that I have had to prepare to do this.
“The national pass rate is well below 50 per cent and Scarborough only comes in line with the national average. I aim to make a difference.
“I’m trying to do what I really enjoy doing which is training and development.”
