A PETITION against Scarborough's new traffic light system signed by more than 800 people has been handed over to the council by campaigners.
Among the hundreds of motorists, the petition was also supported by dozens of frustrated bus drivers and taxi drivers.

Campaigner Jennifer Taylor said: "We want an apology from the council to the Scarborough people. We want to know why they have wasted our money on traffic lights which are not needed. We want explanations."

The campaign group was formed on social networking website Facebook. The group now has 1, 564 members – a 400 per cent rise in numbers since an article about the campaign group was reported in the Evening News.

There is ongoing controversy in Scarborough over the number of sets of traffic lights which have been put up as part of the town's new integrated transport scheme which includes the creation of new park and ride sites in Seamer Road and Filey Road.

The traffic lights are estimated to have cost a total of £4 million, with 10 new sets installed as part of the new scheme, and 10 existing ones upgraded.

Over the past few months new traffic lights have been installed at the end of Valley Bridge, leading to Ramshill, in Filey Road and at Queen Margaret's Road roundabout.

Taxi driver Alex Hird was part of the campaign group who went to meet council leader Cllr Tom Fox and John Riby, Scarborough's head of technical services, to present the petition.

He said: "Customers are constantly complaining about the traffic lights. It is a permanent conversation in the car. I haven't had one person who agrees with it. And the customers I take who are tourists are saying they are not going to come back to Scarborough because of the amount of traffic, which is caused by the lights."

After presenting the petition, the group had a meeting with Mr Riby which gave them an opportunity to ask questions.

After the meeting, Mrs Taylor, said: "We still don't feel we have had our questions answered – they were just answered with more questions.

"So we decided we would give the system time to work, if indeed it does. We are going to give it six months to see how the system operates. Meanwhile we will be continuing to monitor the situation, do more research and speak to more people."

The group will meet with Mr Riby again after Easter.

Mr Riby said: "I'm also meeting some of the group to look at journey times across town and I'm also looking into some idiosyncrasies which the group point out at certain sites."

The borough and county councils are working together to implement the new scheme.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire County Council said: "The Scarborough Integrated Transport Scheme is a major construction project which could not have been achieved without the installation of traffic lights. The county council and its contractors do everything possible to keep disruption and congestion to an absolute minimum.

"Over the next few weeks, as the work progresses, the lights will be phased in to co-ordinate with the urban traffic control system, and motorists should soon then see an easing of the problems."

Here we go again, SBC once again hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons, yet again we will in all probability be the laughing stock stock of the whole country, Scarborogh the town with more traffic lights than cars.

The next award the town is likely to receive is the most motorist unfreindly in the whole UK, what with these lights, parking charges and the ever popular enforcers.

I still think the council are saving the best for last, congestion charging, SBC have now completely fulfilled the first requirement, congestion, now it only remains for them to work out the most profitable method of collecting more ill gotten gains to fill their coffers.

Well we had the question about conjestion charges maybe coming into force on out list of 5 pages but because Mr riby was not listerning to alot of our questions and always answering with questions or completely changing the subject we could not get to the question even though the meeting lasted 1hr 30mins. We did feel he was told what to say and what not to say like he was sticking to a script. The meeting should have been with Cllr Tom Fox but he was engaged in another meeting and Cllr Andrew Backhouse just did not show up which we did expect to happen. Please if there is anyone out there for the new traffic system let me know because I am interested on what there reasons are.

Re 2 Mrs JT,

Do not hold your breath waitng for someone in favour of the lights to come along, it could prove fatal to your health, best wishes and good luck.

Jennifer, They have to justify their wages.

I remember twenty years back, one ridiculous decision made by the council was justified by them saying "A decision had to be made."

I went shopping in Filey yesterday. :-)

re post 2, to Mrs J Taylor.
Thank you for commenting that I didn't bother to turn up at the meeting, and that you expected this to happen. Of course you did - your e-mail requesting the meeting to hand over the petition was sent directly to Cllr Tom Fox asking if you could hand the petition to him direct as you had been informed that he was the most appropriate person to receive it and, in your words, could be trusted.
At no point have I been contacted by yourself ( or indeed any member of your group) requesting a meeting, and at no point in your e-mail to Cllr Tom Fox did you request my attendance.
On hearing about your handover I did ask whether I needed to be there, as Cabinet Member, but was informed that as it was a handover of a petition, and the fact that you specifically asked to hand it to Cllr Tom Fox, that it was not neccesary.
If you had had the courtesy to ask I would have been there, and if you still feel there is any merit in meeting before the new year then I would be only too happy to do so.
I'm not hard to get hold of, but to make it easy for yourself here's my e-mail address :- cllr.andrew.backhouse@scarborough.gov.uk

I look forward to hearing from you, as obviously you had conveniently forgotten, for the SEN's benefit, that you hadn't invited me in the first place!!!!

SBC you must listen we pay your wages. Many of us are fed up of the traffic lights you bestowed on us. Remove those silly light on Filey road, Queen Margerts and Valley bridge, these create more problems than it was meant to resolve.

John Riby says there are "some idiosyncrasies" amongst this mess of roads in and out of Scarborough. Well, John, I think you ought to get out and about a little more. Come out of your breakfast/lunch meetings and see what is happening on the roads that you are controlling.
One thing you could do is give me the directions to Falsgrave as I leave Curry's electrical store. Thanks John.

When I went to Currys last week instead of using the old miniround about at Queen Margarets road, I now have to turn right on to Edgehill road and right again on to Hinderwell road, a pain but its the quickest route

These lights are ill-conceived and the roundabout did what it was meant to do.

Harrogate council saw this lot(sbc) coming £4 million for 20 sets of lights, they could have bought Blackpool for that.
