YOU shall not go to the ball!
A Scarborough College schoolboy has been banned from his end of school prom – which he helped to organise – in an action his parents have described as "petty".

Harrison Thorpe has been blackballed from this year's Year 11 prom because his parents chose to keep him on holiday for the first three days of the summer term, which began in April.

The youngster, who is currently taking his GCSEs at the £9,000-plus a year independent school, was initially given a three-week suspension, a period which would have included the date of the prom.

However, the suspension, which was scheduled to begin on the day of his last exam and covered a period when he would have spent little time on school premises, was lifted – but Harrison has been told he still cannot attend the party.

I find that this attitude by a school that charges such fees is absolutely disgusting. This boys only crime being that his parents chose to take 3 school days as part of an holiday. If this had been the child of an MP then nothing would have been done. For gods sake people he is not a criminal nor are his parents the boy is not a danger to the pupils at school nor a prolific offender. Let this boy have his prom after all he has worked through his education. Stop being petty minded and show what you teach RESPECT HONOUR and MATURE ATTITUDE.

What a pompous decision!! So he missed 3 days of school, isn`t the family entitled to a break especially as holiday dates are not always the exact dates of school holidays. At the price his parents pay for his education theres should be NO question to him attending the ball.

Get real people, you don't get suspended for missing three days, there must be more to this story than meets the eye. The fact that, incredibly, no one from the College was asked to comment is perhaps another clue.

Also, in general, terms, keeping kids on holiday during term time, presumably to fit in with the parents' life style, is not something that should be encouraged. Let's hear the College's side of the story before we all jump on the bandwagon.

Parents and pupils know the consequences that can be imposed for missing school because holidays are deemed more important to some parents.

As in post 4, one does get the feeling there is a little more than 3 days involved for this ban.

Well done Scarborough College !!!

Do the rules for one not apply to all? I am the parent of a 13 year old and she doesnt attend a fee paying school but the rules for holidays are the same - you are not allowed to take your child out of school term time for holidays. Children on average get what 15 weeks holiday (over 3 months) a year and they couldnt book a holiday during those 15 weeks ?????

Wish more schools would do the same!

Crikey this must have been a slow news day as the Year 11 prom was held on 11th June! That aside Scarborough College's policy on holidays in term time is absolutely crystal clear and always has been. Despite each family receiving a Parent's Handbook each year outlining the rules some parents just won't listen. Well done Scarborough College!!

i agree that rules are there for a reason,,but this boy is 13,,his parents made the decision of the holiday dates,,&they should be the ones punished; what choice did the boy have;or do you think a 13 yr old has the right to insist he be left to fend for himself while his parents were away
