THE new director of English Heritage for Yorkshire and the Humber has vowed to spearhead efforts to safeguard historic buildings, landscapes and conservation areas in and around Scarborough.
Trevor Mitchell, 48, is originally from Birmingham but considers himself a naturalised Yorkshireman, having worked for English Heritage in the county for 20 years.

Mr Mitchell said that he recognised and valued the historical significance of Scarborough, and said that work was already under way to protect, preserve and restore many buildings and sites of interest in the area.

"We've been involved with St Martin on the Hill church helping them with repair grants for their wonderful stained glass windows," he said.

"We're also concerned about the Ayton Castle tower in West Ayton. It's 700 years old and a real landmark in the area. We've been helping the council to appeal for funding and we're hoping public access will be allowed in the future."

In the Scarborough and Ryedale area there are 3,994 listed buildings, and more than 1,000 scheduled monuments.

Mr Mitchell added: "North Yorkshire's historic places are priceless assets, and Scarborough and Ryedale are the richest places for archaeology in the county with some sites between 3,000 and 4,000 years old.

"Scarborough has a fantastic collection of Victorian buildings and when I think of the town I always think of the Grand Hotel which I see as a symbol of how prosperous the town was. The town centre will always be a priority for me.

"We all want to live in places that have local distinctiveness and enjoy a high quality of life. That's what historic landscapes, neighbourhoods and streetscapes can deliver, building on our strengths and identity.

"Rather than being an obstacle to development they should be at its core."

#3..... Well said,
My Wife and I were only talking about the Pavillion Hotel, the South bay Pool, and the Northside only last week. S.B.C. should get an award for what they have destroyed, our beautiful town has been torn apart by the bulldozzers and diggers.
What would happen if York was to destroy the Minster, or London with it's history, and yet Scarborough and the people who have been in charge over many years love to knock the place down, .......WHY?.

Re Post 4 'Bluebird One'

They did get a prize, in fact they got more than one.

The totally worthless 'Enterprise Awards'. All they have done is give the 'Enterprise Gang' and all the hangers on an excuse to party.

*2 Deleted, presumably one of one of towns Tory sycophants.

THE new director of English Heritage for Yorkshire and the Humber, Trevor Mitchell said; "Scarborough has a fantastic collection of Victorian buildings and when I think of the town I always think of the Grand Hotel which I see as a symbol of how prosperous the town was”.

“A symbol of how prosperous the town was” now there myself and Mr Mitchell can totally agree, it was once a prosperous town but after years of misrule under the jackboot of Tory domination SBC have left the town with some of the most deprived areas in the whole country.
The whole town is being taken over by ‘SBCs councillors special relationship cronies, the devious private developers.

It is to be hoped that organizations like English Heritage can stop the rot in what was truly the ‘Queen of watering places’ the only water we seem to have in Scarborough now is when our local councillors urinate on us all from a great height.
