A NEW casino could be coming to Scarborough following a planning application to convert the ground floor of the New George Hotel in Newborough.
Grosvenor Casinos, a division of the Rank Group, operated a casino next door to the Grand Hotel on St Nicholas Cliff until July 2006. The firm still holds a licence to operate a casino, and that licence will now be transferred to the Newborough site if planning permission is granted.

In April 2008 planning permission was granted to convert the rest of the building into 32 en-suite bedrooms, for occupation by single students. The Grade II listed building will be managed by the University of Hull.

A spokesman for the Rank Group told the Evening News: "Until July 2006 Grosvenor Casinos operated a casino within Scarborough at St Nicholas Cliff. These premises were small and operated in a building with a number of shortcomings, including poor toilet facilities and inadequate access for disabled customers. Grosvenor therefore took the difficult decision to cease trading and closed the casino.

"However, whilst Grosvenor closed the casino, it retained the casino premises licence and since then we have been looking for an alternative location in the town.

"We now believe we have found the ideal location which is the ground floor of 26-27 Newborough, which until recently was the bar of the New George Hotel."

Scarborough Council planning officers say they hope to reach a decision by the end of March.

News of the new casino received a mixed response from traders in Newborough. Carolyn Knaggs, of the Vortex fashion shop, said: "It's one less empty building and that's got to be good news. The economy around here really needs a boost – I'm not sure a casino's the way to do it, but at least it will bring some new jobs."

Nicky Berry, of HG Discount, said: "In a place like Scarborough I think one casino's enough.

"It might bring a few more people down here though, this part of town needs livening up."

If the application is successful the new casino will contain a poker/gaming area, some gaming machines and food and drink facilities, and will create 12 full and part-time jobs.

You could not make it up really.

A casino with student accomodation above. Totally illogical.

It will struggle as I do not believe Scarborough can support 2 casino's.

There simply is not the money about. There are the habitual gamblers who would sell their grandmother to gamble that's for sure.

If it goes ahead and is not successful and closes the loss to a company like the Rank Group will be insignificant. They will absorb the loss no problem. It would be different if it had been just a normal business venture by a.n.other.

Bright light city gonna set my soul
Gonna set my soul on fire
Got a whole lot of money that's ready to burn,
So get those stakes up higher
There's a thousand pretty women waitin' out there
And they're all livin' devil may care
And I'm just the devil with love to spare
Viva Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas

How I wish that there were more
Than the twenty-four hours in the day
'Cause even if there were forty more
I wouldn't sleep a minute away
Oh, there's black jack and poker and the roulette wheel
A fortune won and lost on every deal
All you need's a strong heart and a nerve of steel
Viva Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas

Viva Las Vegas with you neon flashin'
And your one armbandits crashin'
All those hopes down the drain
Viva Las Vegas turnin' day into nighttime
Turnin' night into daytime
If you see it once
You'll never be the same again

I'm gonna keep on the run
I'm gonna have me some fun
If it costs me my very last dime
If I wind up broke up well
I'll always remember that I had a swingin' time
I'm gonna give it everything I've got
Lady luck please let the dice stay hot
Let me shoot a seven with every shot
Viva Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas,Viva Las Vegas
Viva, Viva Las Vegas

food and drink facilities, its the drink bit that should set alarm bells ringing in this area that is already swamped with all 'open all hours booze outlets.

The Opera House Casino already sell booze 20 hrs a day, how much more do we need.

Next thing we know Scarborough will hit the national headlines once again for all the wrong reasons.

Come to sunny Scarborough 'The countries Gambling and Booze Capitol on the East Coast'.

What a load of nonsense, they missed the ball and allowed somebody to come in and take their entire market share to a site that was attractive, modern, and served (though I understand it's shut at the moment) top quality meals.

However, that part of town needs a bit of a focal point, and this might be it.
