SCARBOROUGH MP Robert Goodwill has supported a Government move to increase the use of Taser stun guns.
About 30,000 police officers across England and Wales are to be trained to use the guns.

Currently, only specialist firearms officers carry the weapon which can temporarily disable a suspect with a charge of up to 50,000 volts.

Ministers have announced plans to buy 10,000 more Tasers and extend their use to all frontline officers.

Mr Goodwill said: "Used properly by the police they are a useful way of apprehending people – without having to use firearms. It is a non fatal way of restraining somebody whose behaviour is such that you can't apprehend them in a normal way."

Acting assistant chief constable of North Yorkshire Police Sue Cross said: "North Yorkshire Police welcomes the announcement by the Home Office.

"We will be studying the report and guidance to assess the future needs in respect of the number of specially-trained officers required to ensure we are able to protect the communities of North Yorkshire from those who pose significant harm."

The Home Office says Tasers have helped to resolve incidents without injury, but Amnesty International warns against using them as tools of routine force.

In recent years Tasers have become standard police equipment in the UK and are regarded as a less dangerous alternative to guns. They deliver an electric shock by two barbed darts trailing wires from the weapon.

Police officers in England and Wales have fired the 50,000-volt stun guns more than 1,000 times since 2004.

The proposals follow a year-long pilot scheme which saw their use extended to frontline officers in 10 police forces.

Sadly, Against, I think you have got mixed up between Phasers and Teleport Bracelets, but I agree with the sentiments.

The Tasers will be of no benefit to Scarborough Police anyway, as they can't be fired from inside the Police Station.

i think they will be very usful , they will be able to use them to jump start the police cars that havent moved in such a long time . i also wonder if using all that energy and increasing our carbon foot print is worth it when all the courts ie out of touch ninety year old judges will let them off so they can get compo for being zapped

Ok what police officers ??? I work in the town centre and all I have seen is a support officer in the last few months. Who was doing a good job, but the powers that be have taken away his bike. So I dont have much hope that we will get officers that are allowed to have stun guns. Mr Goodwill - what about setting off simple and support having visible officers in the town. Please give the town centre support officer is bike back, he got to any problems so much faster, you fools!

mp Mr goodwill says tasers are non fatal, well it might come as a SHOCK to him when he does some research on the use of tasers in the USA and discovers that they have been the cause of many deaths when used by the police.
stun guns, sten guns, tasers ,rubber and plastic bullets may well help to control our offenders but is this the society we wish to live in?

#6 yes - lets taser all the poor and needy and people with any sort of problem and on the unemployed too, shouldn't people be taken to court before they're punished for any offence - you know just in case their not guity or somthing. Indeed lets electrocute and cause agonising pain to anyone we don't like the look of - save zillions in lawyers and legal aid and all that. Could we start with the house of commons? Reminds of of that old Spitting Image sketch with the RH Norman Tebbit. And, by the way, how long before the really nasty people get hold of them to use at will?

The 'Tazer' on the scale of force, the highest being death, the lowest being verbal communication, is lower than the ASP baton of which every police officer carries, as this can kill instantly. The Tazer would only kill if someone landed wrongly i.e banging their head, but training in the UK negates this.
I am all for it.
And those who make comment on police officers, if its that easy - why dont you go and do it?
