LEGOLAND deal collapses

THE multi-million pound Scarborough LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Deal has collapsed.
Bosses at Merlin Entertainments - the parent company of LEGOLAND has decided not to go ahead with its plans to build the major tourist attraction as part of the town's North Bay Sands development.

Instead the company says it wants to focus its investment in the USA and mainland Europe.

Scarborough Council chief executive Jim Dillon, said: "We are naturally very disappointed to receive this news from Merlin Entertainments.

"We were always aware that the locating of a LEGOLAND Discovery Centre in Scarborough was not a foregone conclusion and that Merlin were looking at other possible locations for a Discovery Centre.

"Our challenge was to make sure we did everything asked of us to make the proposal possible and we have done that. The stipulation from Merlin that the facility must open by April 2009 made it essential to make the public aware of the proposal at an early stage in order to both gauge their support for the project and also to undertake the required consultation on the planning application submitted for the development.

"We have had a dedicated team working continuously on the project for the last few months in order to do everything possible to deliver this attraction to the town and Merlin have praised the Council and developers, Benchmark, for their enthusiasm and support for the project."

Plans for the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre were first revealed last month. The attraction was expected to draw up to 300,000 visitors a year and news of the development had received almost unanimous backing from the towns residents and business leaders.

A spokesman from Benchmark Leisure, the firm behind the £150 million Sands development said: "We are obviously hugely disappointed and despite both ourselves and the council meeting every legal, financial planning and design challenge required to meet the proposed opening date of April 2009, a decision has been taken which was ultimately out-with our hands.

"However we will continue to deliver the Sands project and have plenty more irons in the fire which could sit well with the waterpark and proposals for the Northstead Manor Gardens in creating the principle visitor attractions."

Mr Dillon said he was still optimistic about the North Bay development, he said: "While we are disappointed we have to accept the decision and move forward.

"The momentum of progress on the Sands Project before the LEGOLAND opportunity arose was and remains positive and we will continue to work with Benchmark to ensure that the development is a success."

That's a shame, although I have to admit, Scarborough seemed a strange location to have a multi million pound centre in the first place!

Oh what a shame, I still cant help feel that we are being taking for a ride by the developer, it seems the plans get changed very other day.

After all the high seas we get on that part of town any way how come now one has upgraded the defences when we had the work done some years back. The wall is only a few feet high in some places, particularly near the two slip ways near the roundabout. I noticed marine drive has been closed for a couple of days and only recently been reopened

On reflection it does seem odd. How come Merlin changed there minds, after all you woudl think they would have considered the location and the costs they must have ensued and then all of a sudden they changed they minds. I smell a rat

Have Merlin only just realised that Scarborough isn't in the USA or mainland Europe? How much money have the Council spent on their "dedicated team working continuously on the project for the last few months", and what exactly did this team do? Somebody somewhere is having a big laugh at Scarborough's expense. Again. Still, at least we have the luxury flats for the out-of-town second home brigade.

PS Mixed metaphor alert: "irons in the fire" will probably not sit well with a waterpark!

Who needs Legoland the Flats rising ever higher are Legoland. Do we need a multi-store carpark now? Why not a park and ride by The Scalby Manor hotel,i thought the idea was to keep cars out of towns.Sorry, forgot, Benchmark can do whatever they want.Wonder why?

Funny old world. The below from an earlier entry post reference.

Quote.
4th March's SEN front page, has David Rhodes of Benchmark telling us "Attracting LEGOLAND to Scarborough is beyond our wildest dreams".

Yet further on in the article a spokesman for Merlin Entertainments states, quote, "However it is important to note that to date Merlin has made no final decision as to whether to proceed with this project, although this is expected before the summer",
unquote.

So to me it indicated back then that Merlin were still undecided whether to proceed or not. It would indicate their decision is well ahead of when expected.

Everyone and his dog was so sure that Legoland was about to arrive at 'The Sands'. It is fast becoming a joke, who is running this project ?. Does the Council have any say in the development. Or have they just donated the land for Benchmark to do as they wish with it ?.

At the end of the day I think we the tax payer will have one hell of a fast growing White Elephant to pay for.

I get the feeling we will see a privately owned block of flats at The Corner and odd bits here and there with the rest a wasteland.

Remind me then - where do we now stand on the Waterpark, which was (or maybe was not?) dependent on the Legoland deal going ahead (Feb 26th)?

Funny how everyone who contributes to this page saw what was coming a mile off, yet the Council fell for it utterly. Nice one Benchmark / Merlins, build them flats HIGH!

Naive is the only word to describe the Council officials.Signed, sealed and delivered, then you go public. Giving your competitors no chance of gazumping your efforts. Or in plain Yorkshire " keep your gob shut!"

Funny how the Council insists on planning briefs being prepared for all manner of small developments but as for Benchmark its a case of here's the best site bar none in the UK, do what you like with it lads as long as its housing and profitable for you.
