ONE of Scarborough's top hotels is fighting the recession by planning to bring a new kind of tourist to town in troubled economic times.
The Ox Pasture Hall Hotel in Lady Edith's Drive has received planning permission from the North York Moors National Park Authority to expand the hotel with a development of 11 luxury suites.

The scheme is expected to create 14 new jobs.

The £1 million development will be constructed around a new second courtyard with the new building designed to reflect the property's agricultural history.

The suites will have one or two bedrooms with lounge accommodation and each will have a luxury bathroom with walk-in showers, large feature baths and natural stone tiles.

Manager Nick Nasser said: "The aim is to create Scarborough's first deluxe boutique hotel.

"We hope to attract a new type of customer who appreciates walking, the countryside and admiring the magnificent scenery of the North York Moors National Park – the sort of customer who traditionally has chosen the Lake District over the North York Moors and Scarborough."

The new development follows on from the construction of a £300,000 kitchen, bedroom refurbishment and new restaurant at the hotel, which was the only one in Scarborough to be featured in this year's edition of the AA guide to Britain's Best Hotels.

Mr Nasser added: "We're only into our second year of running the hotel and things are moving very quickly – now we're moving to the next level.

"We believe very strongly that Scarborough is ready for this sort of luxury accommodation.

"We're confident for the future – we've already noticed that more people are staying in the UK for their holiday this year – we're very optimistic about Scarborough's future as a tourist centre."

No awards won here you will note, just "get off your backside and do something" enterprise. More power to their elbow.

Good luck to Ox pasture!

I know how difficult it is to run a high quality business in Scarborough so as #1 said 'more power to their elbow'.

"more power to their elbow", doesn't sound like they are doing it with hard work and elbow grease, they are doing it with 1 million pounds. If all the business's in the town had access to this kind of cash then we would all be fine. It is hard to run a high quality business in Scarborough, mostly because there is so little money to invest. Where are the stories about really skint business people doing something cheap but with lots of hard work that really makes a difference. Anyone can build a new wing with enough money. What would be amazing is if they were doing all that for a hundred grand with the help of friends and family, that would be a story. Your story is simply "company has some money and spends it". What a revalation. Can someone tell me what boutique means?

Don't quite get what you're on about Mark, please can you explain further? I have no interest in the Ox Pasture, this seemed like a good story to me, but if there is more than meets the eye please share it with us.

EG: What 1 million pounds? Boutique???

Don't know many Lake District walkers who would be attracted to this end of the Moors by a "boutique" hotel. Even fewer give a hoot about luxury bathrooms. I'm sure there are others who would, so good luck.

Not knocking the area. Have walked and loved it for years- and enjoyed some decent nosh in the Ox Pasture

English, 1 million pounds = cost of development, boutique = pompous title given to their new suites.
I am just trying to say that they might have been wiser hanging onto any money they have to see them through the inevitable bad times that are stretching out in front of us. What would be the point in spending 1 million pounds you had spare if you could save it to see you through the bad times, have our banks not just proved on the most massive of scales that it is a good idea to have more than you think you need tucked away for the bad times. Iam not knocking your happiness for this news, just might not be that good in 4 years time.
