AN organisation has started a new project to provide an advocacy service to older people living in residential homes in Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale.
The scheme by Advocacy Alliance involves an advocate visiting the home monthly to talk with the residents and help them speak up for themselves, make choices and keep control of decisions affecting their daily lives.
The organisation cited an example where a resident of a home mentioned that she could really benefit from having her own wheelchair suited to her current disability. The advocate was able to request a wheelchair assessment on behalf of the resident and within two months she was delighted to receive her own wheelchair individually tailored to her needs.
Volunteers are needed now to offer the same service within residential homes across Scarborough,Whitby and Ryedale.
A spokesman said: "If you can spare one and a half hours a month and would like to help empower older people in residential care contact Advocacy Alliance on (01723) 363910."
