SCARBOROUGH escapologist Danny Hunt became the man in the iron mask when he successfully freed himself from a heavy contraption in the town centre.
Danny performed the tricky stunt outside Timpson yesterday and crowds of shoppers stopped to watch him complete the task.

Danny, from Seamer, was challenged by manager of Nor-Mal fabrications in Malton, Chris Deighton, who saw him performing in Bradford.

Mr Deighton said: "I thought I could make something which he would find hard to get out of so I made the mask for him. It is very heavy and when I made it I thought there was no chance he could get out of here."

Danny was handcuffed and the mask had two padlocks on it. Danny had five minutes to free his hands and then open the mask.

He managed to free himself in two minutes and 45 seconds.

He said: "I was very nervous before it as the mask looked really heavy and extremely uncomfortable. It started well but I did struggle with the padlocks. I was starting to panic at one point but I am just thrilled I managed to do it."

Before the challenge Danny said if he did not complete the task he would wear the mask for 24 hours.

He said: "Obviously I am relieved I do not have to wear it for the rest of the day. I would not have been able to eat and I would have been dripping with sweat."

Before he completed the challenge, people winced as Danny walked on broken glass.

St Augustine's pupil, April Walker, 12, from Northstead said: "He must be mad. I have really enjoyed watching him though. I am on my Easter holidays so I thought it would be good to come and watch. At one point I thought he was struggling to get out of the mask but once he got going I knew he would do it. I think he did really well."
Marian Pycock, 62, from Newby, said: "It was definitely worth watching. He is fascinating to watch and he did really well. The mask looked really uncomfortable so I bet he was relieved to get out."

There was also a performance from 16-year-old magician Michael Jordan from Huddersfield who entertained the crowd by juggling and performing on a unicycle.

He will be performing with the Northern Magic Circle in April when the group comes to Scarborough.
