Rich Hill, who now lives in Fort William, took part in the 17th Jungfrau Marathon which is 26.2 miles long and features 1,900 metres of ascent.

Starting in Interlaken, runners compete on road, track and footpaths over high passes and experience views of glaciers, waterfalls, the Jungfrau and the impressive Eiger North Face.

Mr Hill, 41, said: "Having done a couple of London marathons and a Loch Ness marathon, although not easy I fancied a challenge that was significantly harder – something I would remember all my life."

Around 4,900 people from 37 countries took part in the event. The cut-off time to finish is six and a half hours – over this time participants miss out on a medal and finishers' T-shirt.

Mr Hill said: "At 21 miles I had had enough, my legs were struggling, but the views of mountains were so inspiring I couldn't pack in there."

He crossed the line in six hours and 17 minutes and celebrated with local lager and bratwurst sausage.

Mr Hill is now hoping to take part in the Zermatt marathon, also in Switzerland, next year.
