A graffiti vandal who embarked on a spray-painting spree across Scarborough has been told to "take responsibility" for his life after refusing to pay the £1,200 fine dished out to him.

Sam Mutton, 19, was handed the fine and sentenced to 150 hours of community service after pleading guilty in July to six counts of criminal damage to Scarborough Council property.

Mutton, of Lilac Walk, was ordered before Scarborough Magistrates' Court again after failing to pay a penny of the money owed to the authority after daubing bus shelters, a bridge, a wall and a litter bin in the town with his distinctive "Setto" tag over a two-year period.

The teenager, who is studying graphic design at Yorkshire Coast College, told the court he was struggling to pay the money because his application to open a bank account and appeal for a student grant had been turned down.

Mutton added he had spoken to the Citizens Advice Bureau about his plight and had been given a list of banks to contact about opening an account.

However, he told magistrates he had only applied to two banks in the last six months and had not applied for a part-time job during that period because his course didn't allow him time.

Magistrates ordered Mutton, who also admitted stealing a Kinderland sign worth £65 and a traffic cone during his original trial, to re-pay the amount at a rate of £3 per week and added he must start thinking about his future – or risk landing a prison sentence.

Magistrates' chairman Carol Barker said: "If you do not pay these fines you will inevitably be going into custody and you have to make some very decisive decisions about where your life is going and take responsibility for it.

"You committed these crimes for which £1,200 is owed and you must pay that amount.

"There are lots of banks out there and you have only applied to two of them, so you have to make more of an effort to open an account to get these fines paid off."

#1 I would never stoop to condemning this chap because of his appearance, but I have to say the magistrates have shown far too much tolerance. Custody now, would be my solution.

Anyway, how come being unable to open a bank account prevents you from paying fines? If that were the rule, I think very few fines would get paid.

Do courses run on a night and a weekend?.

Get a weekend job in a bar or something.

Take responability for your self.

Or make him clean up his mess that he has made round the town.

But he still had money to buy the spray paint in the first place so what has he done with that ?
Heres an option...Why not get him to work for the coucil cleaning up the vandalism until he has earned the equivilant of his fine. He could do it at weekends if hes at college during the week. Or am I just being too sensible ?

His photograpgh depicts a feral youth who had no intention of paying any money back. But hopefully now the Magistrate has made an order it will be paid.

He should have been given 6 months inside regardless of studying graphic design at Yorkshire Coast College.

He needs to smarten up otherwise he is likely to become just another drop out and Job Centre candidate.

At £3 per week it'll take him almost 8 years to pay it off! Do fines accrue interest?

"also admitted stealing a Kinderland sign worth £65 and a traffic cone" - come on, what student *hasn't* stolen a traffic cone?

red Post 6.

In answer to your question.

I would suggest sensible and responsible students. It is normally only the druken riff raff of the student fraternity that behave like feral students and steal whatever.

I wonder if Mr Mutton realises that some of us have to go to college part time whilst working in order to gain further education. The repayment of the fine comes first, he should be banned from college and forced to reapply once he has secured employment on a part time basis. If he is as unemployable as it seems then yes, Hometownboy is correct, make him work off the debt by doing stuff for us through the council. £3 a week, once eroded by inflation is barely worth paying anyway, I presume he is doing his community service though?

Why give Scarboroughs answer to 'Banksy' such a hard time? He is an artist, Adolf Hitler liked to paint a thing or two..He turned out OK!

Re Post 9. Read the below and try and understand if not too difficult for you.

"Sam Mutton, 19, was handed the fine and sentenced to 150 hours of community service after pleading guilty in July to six counts of criminal damage to Scarborough Council property".

The sentence should be enough to enlighten you that this feral clown deserved all he got.

Your comments are simply ridiculous and offensive in their content.

Mutton is not an artist by the wildest stretch of anyones imagination. Your other comment is beneath contempt.
