MAGISTRATES will decide tomorrow whether to take action against gipsies who have settled on land in Centurion Way.
The travellers have refused to use the official site in Stoney Haggs Road and moved on to land at Centurion Way in Crossgates – as they did last year.

Scarborough Council has served an application to have the band of travellers removed from the site.

Ian Anderson, Scarborough Council's head of legal and support services, said: "On 1 July 2009 the council became aware of circumstances which indicated events surrounding the Seamer Horse Fair could commence at land on Centurion Way in Scarborough despite the council's best efforts to avoid this.

"The council consulted the owners of the land, Persimmon Homes, who confirmed they had not given consent for this and it would amount to trespass."

Without any bias, could someone say here why the travellers are refusing to move to stoney haggs? the council have closed the road, provided water and toilets, and presumably skips for rubbish. they get a private road for running the traps, so what is the problem ?????

#2. The choice between being cramped onto a road with the use of uneven grass verges, or to pitch camp on a manicured strech of grass with very nice road access, these people by their nature are not worried about water or sanitation. Add the ineptitude of the local authorities then there really is no other option. Unless proper measures are taken then this will repeat itself next year.

'The Council became aware of this on 1 July'!!!! The residents of Southgate, who overlook Centurian Way, became aware that the travellers were moving in on Friday 26 July. The Council had put NOTHING in place to stop them.
As I type this more travellers are moving in. The Council could have saved up all the money they spent on planning and meetings and given it to the residents of Southgate who overlook this 'site'.
They could have planned a better site say in a field at the back of a Councillor's home where he could experience first hand what we have to put up with. Generators running till well past midnight, horses neighin at 3.30 am for ever followed by a cockerill crowing at 5.30 a.m., (yes out our back), happy children playing all day, (cars slowing down or stopping to allow this) horse and carts trotting up and down, hundreds of dogs barking. At the weekend we had music blasting out all day, no peace in the garden. I love children and horses and they all appear to be well looked after.
No toilets have appeared yet - not going into that !!!! There are about 40 caravans waiting to move in parked up at Rillington, probably Friday night.
It is a tradition for the Seamer Horse Fair and I believe the Council should respect this and make suitable provision. I believe the same will happen next year. Someone with some sense has to organise this better.

let's cut to the chase, the Police already have the power to move them on it doesn't matter what the courts say tomorrow, they just dont have the interests of Crossgates at heart. There is a peaceful protest scheduled for 7pm tomorrow....

I can't believe that the press continue to use such racist and offensive language. These people are Travellers, not Gypsies. If such offensive language was used to describe any other ethnic group there would be uproar, but as this affects NIMBYS in the town it is allowed to continue.

you couldn't make this stuff up, I work in York and none of my colleagues believe the shambles that is going on. Particularly that the Police/Council haven't learned from last year. Turns out the Council is going to Court because the Police are unwilling to do their jobs
