Published Date: 20 August 2008
FOREIGN students are being attacked by gangs of Scarborough youths who view them as "easy targets".
The director of a town language school says young visitors are regularly being beaten up by gangs of thugs.

Voyin Maric, director of English Venture, based in The Crescent, has now sent a letter to host parents asking them to collect their guests
on a night. He wrote: "During the past 10 days our pupils have been involved in four separate violent incidents. Other language schools are experiencing similar occurrences."

Mr Maric wrote that the worst incident happened last Wednesday when one of his school's leaders was the victim of a prolonged 15-minute attack.

"He was pushed, punched, kicked and spat upon. There were approximately 16 drunken youths involved in the racially motivated attack. This was all witnessed by our group who simply could not believe what they were seeing. The youths attacked our leader believing he was German."

Mr Maric added in his letter that five of the yobs were later arrested by police. He wrote: "The pattern is always the same. Overseas pupils are approached by local youths demanding money and cigarettes.

When the youths are refused or ignored they quickly follow their demands with physical violence. Often the pupils are targeted in busy populated areas, and then followed into quieter darker streets on their way home before being assaulted."

One host parent, who gave the letter to the Evening News and wished to remain anonymous, told the Evening News: "The student that is with me at the moment came home with the letter and I was absolutely incensed when I read it. Only the other day one of the group she is visiting with was attacked by some youths on the North Bay beach and ended up with a cut lip.

Attacks are very common – the students do talk about this quite a lot. "As someone who hosts students I think it's an absolute disgrace that they can't walk Scarborough's streets in safety."

A spokesman for Scarborough police said: "Attacks on foreign students, like any sort of assault, are completely unacceptable.

Scarborough police will not tolerate incidents of this nature. Anyone with information about incidents of this nature should contact Scarborough police on 0845 6060247 or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 551111."

"Scarborough police will not tolerate incidents of this nature."

Yes but what are they going to DO about it? Monitor the situation?

This again is just like the vandalism on Valley road the other day lack of parental control. parents are responsible for there kids, if any child is caught causing trouble the parents should be fined.

The country is sinking faster the the titanic. lack of decent role models, moral values, discipline, respect and our liberal ideas.

A broken britian, these thugs run around with no respect for anyone or anything, its about time we put a stop to this once and for all!!!

As a regular host to foreign students I can only say that if the powers that be (magistrates) have any concern for the welfare of the town, the next time the perpetrators of such any incidents are prosecuted a VERY clear message is sent out to all the louts out there that we will not tolerate this. The police need to act immediately, liasing with the schools, to ensure that this is cleaned up now. The money these students bring into the town each season is considerable, not to mention the free advertisement of Scarborough all around the world, lets not make that a bad advertisment. I have never had a bad experience with any students I have hosted finding them allways polite and well meaning and can only conclude that the blame for these incidents lies squarely with our own home bred louts.

I agree with MR BENNY - Something should be done to stop these common, little scroats from casuing Scarborough town to become a no go area...Bring back National Service..or public stoning!

I am with JXXXX about the magistrates, its ok the police arresting 5 people, no doubt the same ones who do this all the time, but when they get to court its just a slap on the wrist and a dont do it again, i think we all know this does not work, and the justice system needs a major overhaul.
When i was younger just the sight of a police man made me scared, now the kids just dont seem bothered about authority.
Parents seem to wash there hands if there child is bad, turning them over to social services saying 'i cant take it any more' - well have a spine and dicipline them.
It seems that children are in control and parents just dont care, that is not the police's fault, its a major fault with society.
But then how do you change it??

No, we don't need hanging or flogging, nor to bring back National Service, nor will the "I blame the parents" mantra solve anything.

And nor will the Scarborough Police achieve much with their usual "we are monitoring the situation from Northway" approach.

These kids need to be caught, arrested and charged, and (if found guilty of course) punished - by several years in jail, not Community Service or ASBOs.

These youth have been arrested and are on bail pending a decision from the Crown Prosecution Service on any charges that they will face.

Just watched one of the police programmes on ITV2 or the like.

Camera crew with the police. This programme done in Scarborough.

Though it was 2004 the main segment was a gang of local children attacking German students on Aberdeen Walk. The main attacker a girl of about 15 was arrested. The only one.

As normal though, the magistrate gave the uusal slap on the wrist. There is no deterrent when these feral children are caught attacking foreign students.

The town in this day and age needs to have beat coppers walking around. When offenders are caught and charged then they need more than a slap on the wrist. At the moment these thugs know there is no deterrent.

We have read of these attacks before and for our foreign guests to be treat in this way is appalling.

This type of behaviour is getting our town a bad name world wide. It must be stopped. It makes me feel ashamed that this is happening in our lovely town.

The magistrates must give our Police more support, as the Police have done their best to catch this gang, now let's wait and see what the punishment is.

I agree with Amaroo: We need more police out on the beat. The young must also be taught to respect the Police.

Just seeing them about when we were young was enough to make us all behave respectfully to everyone.
