ARTS and sports organisations in Scarborough have welcomed tomorrow's visit by Andy Burnham, the Minister for Culture, Media and Sport.
During his seaside day-trip, the minister will meet representatives from Scarborough's sport, leisure and cultural groups as well as hearing about other local developments.
He will also visit George Pindar Community Sports College in Eastfield to mark the handover of the council's leisure centre, and see the state-of-the-art tennis centre and other sports facilities.
Other cultural groups on his itinerary include children's creativity project Artbeat, which meets on Saturdays at Falsgrave Community Resource Centre.
Artbeat's Vee Shrimpton said: "It will be a great opportunity to tell the minister how important creativity is to children and how it helps their development. Our group started out just from me doing art with my grandchildren and I thought how great it would be if other children could take part as well. It's very exciting to be able to get the message across directly to Mr Burnham."
Representives of recently promoted Scarborough Athletic, who are hoping to find a new home in a council-built community stadium, will also meet the Everton-supporting minister.
The club's chairman Simon Cope said: "Obviously the situation with the new ground will be top of our agenda. We want to fill him in on the situation and see if there's anything he can do on a national level to help us and the council achieve our goals. He was chief executive of the Association of Supporters Trusts, so he knows how we operate."
The minister is visiting on the invitation of Annajoy David, the Labour Party's prospective parliamentary candidate for Scarborough and Whitby, who said: "I am delighted that Andy Burnham accepted my invitation to come to our constituency which, as we know, has a thriving cultural industries sector, a vibrant sports and arts base and a healthy and growing music and theatre scene.
"I'm especially pleased that Andy Burnham asked that he could meet community groups involved in art, sport and culture in the area as well as the established institutions.
"All types of people in all walks of life play a crucial role in ensuring the cultural and sporting development of Scarborough and Whitby. We cherish their work and must continue to support and help develop it."
