COMPETITORS taking part in this year's North Sea Yacht Race sponsored by Boyes stores have been flying the firm's flag.
Mr Scarborough, Dave Cooper, visited some of the people taking part in the race which starts on Friday at 7pm as they made final preparations for their 210-mile journey to Ijmuiden on the Dutch coast.

One of the entrants taking part in this year's event is the town's urban renaissance manager Nick Taylor, who is also vice commodore of Scarborough Yacht Club.

Mr Taylor said: "Every year yachts from up and down the North East coast take part in this premier sailing event and it would not be possible without the wonderful support we get from Boyes.

"Many of those taking part in the race act as ambassadors for the town, telling people they meet in Holland about what a fantastic place Scarborough is to live and work; and about some of the companies that do business in the town and beyond.

"Boyes is one of those firms and members of Scarborough Yacht Club are proud of their association with one of the town's longest established businesses.

"We're all looking forward to a competitive race this weekend and to spreading the word about Scarborough and Boyes when we get over to Holland. We also hope as many people as possible will come down to the harbour on Friday at 7pm to watch the start of the race."

The Boyes flag is flown by boats taking part in the race before and after the event.

How interesting the website have just disallowed comments on a number of other 'comment on articles' and now we are allowed to comment on two absolute non events that are advertising orientated i.e., BOYES and SHREDDIES.

SEN you are insulting your readers intelligence.

Re Post 1 'Alan Kennedy'

As a number of us that have been posting for quite a long time the SEN is very selective indeed as to what they open up for 'Comment On' to be allowed.

You will possibly have read in the posts (me included) that the SEN tend not to publish many items that are relevant but they are published in 'sister' papers of the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post.

Yet when Jimmy Saville directs traffic in Leeds at a road traffic accident it is headlines in the SEN !!!! You tell me.

This topic ? simply due to one of the 'Enterprise Gang', Nick Taylor being involved. Had he not been likely as not it would not have been reported.

Funny old world.

Actually this is very interesting. Did you know Nick Taylor is vice commodore of Scarborough Yacht Club? I didn't, but it explains a few things.

I did not know he was vice commodore and as you post, it explains a lot. Had he not been I doubt it would have been mentioned.

Good grief your are all right it is the same Nick Taylor, councillor Popples boss, no wonder him and Popples were so keen on the harbour redevelopment, Commodore Taylor and Comrade Popple what a fine outstanding example of service to the public and of course the sailing fraternity.

I wish you guys could see what little effect their presence at the yacht club actually has on any developments. I am as cynical as anyone about backslapping et al, but many other seaside towns in the country have had millions spent on their marina's, much of it taxpayers money and they have no members of council on their board! I also love the way you talk about the "Sailing fraternity", as if they are just one type of person! Amusing

Yes an interesting and enjoyable sporting event is a race across the North Sea again putting Scarborough on the map. But if the town's urban renaissence manager is sailing across the North Sea, as vice commodore of Scarborough Yacht Club, can I ask as to where his actual priorities lie as I dont see much improvement within the town centre these days. How many closed shops do we now have falling into a shabby state if not in dire need of maintainence?

Well, I for one can't help but notice the Council's obsession with keeping the sailing fraternity happy. Since #3 has pointed this out, I agree the reasons behind a lot of decisions made by "the Council" (ie their unelected officers, of which Taylor is of course one) can be seen in a very new light. And I was totally unaware of Taylor's position as "vice commodore". Many thanks to the SEN for pointing this blatant conflict of interests out to the general public, however inadvertently.

8# And of course it may also explain how the harbour gets ill afforded money thrown at it.
Or would that be pure coincidence again?

Amazing isn't it ?.

Yesterday we had one of the Enterprise Gang aka Renaissance manager Nick Taylor featured as above in a photo.

On page 13 of todays SEN we have a photo of the Commodore of the yacht club and the sponsor of the race. It seems a hasty afterthought by someone.

Today's photo and article is the one that should have taken preference.

I wonder why it didn't ?
