Published Date: 22 May 2008
SCARBOROUGH MP Robert Goodwill has been criticised by Government housing minister Caroline Flint for "patronising" remarks about tenants.
Mr Goodwill had queried plans in the House of Commons to pay housing benefit directly to tenants rather than landlords.

He said: "Has it dawned on the minister that the move to pay housing benefit directly to tenants rather than to landlords for n
ew tenancies will result in an increase in evictions and a reluctance among private landlords to let their houses to people on benefit?"

But Ms Flint said his attitude was "patronising" and added: "I understand the driver for the change was about ensuring those renting in the private sector who have traditionally been in receipt of housing benefit can take more responsibility for finding their housing and assume more financial responsibility, too.

"The change is about developing a more independent approach, rather than a dependent approach.

"I also understand – I am sure that colleagues from the Department for Work and Pensions will be happy to provide him with information on this – that safeguards are in place, particularly for vulnerable tenants, to ensure that rents are paid and, where appropriate, that adequate and suitable support is given either by Jobcentre Plus or local authorities, or by charitable organisations working with particular groups of vulnerable people."

haha, so some of the money issued by the council for housing may not go straight into the pockets of landlords, good because people who mass rent out properties to benefit claimants are the biggest state benefits scroungers going, often raking in tens of times what a single claimant could

I can't see this working as some tenants will not pass the money over to the landlords. The landlords will know this and will not offer accommodation to the homeless. Then that will cause more problems.

In the past when rent money has been held up by the Benefit Agency landlords were very concerned and had to wait for all to be sorted out. This caused ill feeling on both sides.

When I was at work I have had owners of companies tell me that they have installed lifts etc in houses and the disabled person was given the money and never paid for the equipment when it was installed.

So I do feel the same thing will happen if they are given the rent direct. The temptation for some to spend the money will be too great.

missed the point I think Lady T, if private landlords not as keen to let their slums to poeple on benfit that can only be a good thing

ZVictor One: Do you want to see all the homeless people sleeping out on the streets? We need these landlords to take in the homeless.

If the properties do get run down it is usually the inmates that get them into that state. It is not an easy job being a landlord.

I think most do a great job and try to maintain their properties and keep them in good order. Sometimes they are fighting a loosing battle. However not everyone trashes their flats and there are some very nice people who for one reason or another become homeless.

These ghettos only exist because private landlords want them to exist, not because the inmates, sorry tenants, want them to. Anything that prevents public money going into the pockets of these parasites can only be a good thing.

As for Goodwill and his patronising spiel about how this will lead to a "reluctance among private landlords to let their houses to people on benefit" - that could be the best news this town has had in decades.

Badger464: Sorry that was a bad choice of word on my part. Anyone who knows me would tell you that I feel passionately about the homeless and getting support for them. I certainly would never speak badly of them.

Thank you so much for pointing out my mistake, I will try and concentrate more when writing and thinking.

Lady T, your last three words say's it all, writing and thinking, may I respectfully suggest that if you reverse the order of these words it may go some way to greater clarity of your comment.

Sorry CC: We have had a young sudden death in our family and it has scrambled my brain. I was in the process of writing when a family member arrived and I had to send my letter off fast.

I just wish I was as gifted as you and thought as much about what I wrote like you always do or don't!

I feel that after some of the insults you have written to people you are the LAST person to correct anyone!!!

Please refrain from starting to attack me now. I have made a slip up, let it rest.
