POLICE had to divert traffic at a busy Scarborough road junction after a car and a van collided during the morning rush hour.
Officers were called to the traffic lights at the junction between Northway, Westborough and Valley Bridge Road – which is overlooked by the Stephen Joseph Theatre – yesterday at about 8.20am.

The collision involved a woman driving a Volkswagen Golf and a man driving a white van.

Two ambulances were also sent to the scene and a Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the woman was taken to Scarborough Hospital because she appeared to be suffering from the effects of shock.

Sally Walker, from the nearby Rendezvous Cafe, said the collision happened after the lights had changed and the van collided with the side of the car.

Her colleague Natasha Posthill said: “There was a loud bang. When I looked out I saw that the whole of the side of her car was caved in.”
