MORE and more people from the Scarborough area are taking part in a national campaign to oppose the introduction of identity cards.
Local supporters of the campaign – NO2ID – say they were bolstered by the attendance at the inaugural meeting, at the Cask pub in Cambridge Terrace.

Scarborough NO2ID co-ordinator Madeleine Parkyn said: “We had a very encouraging first meeting wit
h a good turnout.”

NO2ID is a non-partisan campaign opposing the ID card and national identity register planned by the government.

Ms Parkyn said: “More and more people are waking up to the threat to liberty and privacy posed by the introduction of ID cards and the rapid growth of the database state.”

She said a recent YouGov poll discovered that more people are opposed to the introduction of a national identity scheme than support it.

“The aim of the Scarborough No2ID group is to provide a support and information network for people in our area who want to oppose the scheme,” she added.

“The group intends to screen the critically acclaimed film Taking Liberties, about the erosion of our fundamental civil liberties,” said Ms Parkyn.

At the meeting, the group also decided to run information stalls in Westborough.

It wants to ensure that leaflets are available at key sites in the town and plans to run an email information list as well as hold a public meeting to discuss the issue.

Ms Parkyn said: “We have been in touch with Robert Goodwill MP, who would be willing to speak, as is Tanya Exley-Moore, who will be the Liberal Democrat’s local candidate at the next general election.”
