Bright and Breezy: YTV in all weathers by Jon Mitchell
Review by Ian Duncan
JON Mitchell has been a familiar face presenting local weather forecasts for more than a decade, but his interest was sparked at an early age when he was the weather monitor at his primary school.
All his years’ experience has been gathered together in his new book which has something for everyone – whether you are interested in finding out more about the weather, gaining an insight into the world of broadcasting or just want to look at a selection of stunning photographs.
And the first thing that hits you when you flick through the pages of the book is the high standard of the photographs, which have all been taken by ordinary members of the public.
Scarborough features quite prominently and in a variety of weather conditions – from the mist-shrouded Grand Hotel to my personal favourite the Diving Belle statue on a November day.
The author gives his own views on each of the pictures as well as explaining the weather conditions.
There are also contributions from other personalities such as Grimsby MP Austin Mitchell – who was one of the first YTV Calendar presenters – Derek Fowlds, from Heartbeat, and Chris Chittell, of Emmerdale.
It was good to read about their experiences as well as recalling memorable moments over the past 40 years, such as when the Emley Moor TV mast fell down in a storm in March 1969.
If you want to see the area in all its diversity, and do not fancy the idea of a walk in the countryside, then look no further than Jon Mitchell’s new book.
