The event supports the annual Marine Conservation Society Beachwatch 2008.

The clean up has been organised by Sea Life Centre Aquarist Josh Saunders.

He recently completed a similar event at the bay, where volunteers were successful in collecting 577 items of rubbish across a 200m stretch of the beach. The type of rubbish collected included plastics, polystyrene, rubber and metal among others.

A staggering 311 items were made of plastic, an increase of 167 items from the beach clean that was organised by Lyndsey Crawford in 2007.

The Sea Life Centre say this reinforces the recent message from the MCS Beach Report that plastic is a serious threat to marine wildlife.

Mr Saunders said: “After the success of the last beach clean, I would now like to take it to the next level and support MCS in their annual clean up.

“The volunteers were really great earlier this year and I am hoping to recreate the level of interest and ask people to come down and help us again.”

The beach clean will take place on Sunday September 21. Volunteers are asked to meet at Scarborough Sea Life Centre at 11am where everyone will then make their way to start the big clean at Jackson’s Bay.
