A 20-YEAR-OLD Scarborough man received a driving ban after allowing a 16-year-old girl to drive his mother's car.
Simon Pickin, of Overdale, Eastfield, was sentenced at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court after admitting three motoring offences.

Prosecuting, Steven Ovenden said police received reports of a vehicle being driven “suspiciously” in Filey’s North Cliff
Country Park on October 6 last year.

Mr Ovenden said: “Officers saw it driving slowly and stopped the vehicle. It was being driven by a 16-year-old girl.

“The defendant was present and said the car belonged to his mother.

“He had given permission for the girl to drive that vehicle, even though he knew she wasn’t insured and didn’t have a licence.”

The teenage girl is herself due before the court in the coming weeks.

Pickin represented himself in court and admitted charges of aiding and abetting the driving of a motor vehicle with no insurance, permitting the use of a motor vehicle with no insurance, and driving without insurance.

He said: “At the time I wasn’t fully aware of the consequences of not having insurance. I have now paid for a full year’s insurance in advance and have learned my lesson.

“I am sorry, it was a very stupid thing to do and I will never do anything like that again.”

Pickin, who had only passed his test in September, was banned from driving for 55 days. He was also fined £150, along with a £15 victim surcharge and £43 court costs.
