A soldier on leave was attacked in a Scarborough bar by a holidaymaker who punched him to the ground and stamped on his head, a court heard.
Jamie Taylor had been out in the town with friends last August and, after ending up in Oliver's Bar, was allegedly hit by a glass and then attacked by Mpukata Nabiala who was holidaying with friends.

The assault has been condemned by John Anderson
, secretary of the Scarborough Branch of the Royal British Legion.

He said: "If he was in uniform or identifiable as a soldier, then it is deplorable in the week after we have celebrated the town's thanks to them."

Nabiala, 22, a hospital porter from London, was jailed for 15 months at York Crown Court after admitting a charge of assaulting the soldier, although he denied using a glass.

He was also sentenced to a concurrent three month sentence of imprisonment after he admitted a charge of common assault on one of the bar's doorstaff who had been ejecting him following the attack on Mr Taylor.

Simon Ostler, prosecuting, said it was accepted that Nabiala had not used a glass to hit Mr Taylor but he had been seen by doorstaff stamping on his head during a fight between several people in the toilets of the St Thomas Street bar.
