THE annual Wartime Weekend returned to Pickering yesterday with the flag raising ceremony kicking off the nostalgic event.
Hundreds of people are expected to take part in the celebrations over the weekend which will see the town transported back to the 1940s.

Wartime scenarios will be recreated throughout the weekend at Pickering, Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont Stations on the North York Moors Railway.

Yesterday “evacuees” from Pickering’s St Joseph’s Roman Catholic School and Pickering Infants School, above, caught the train to Goathland.

There was also national fire service re-enactment group displays and demonstrations.
