PEOPLE looking for a career in joinery can study for higher qualifications in Scarborough.
Yorkshire Coast College has been granted approval to run courses at its Lady Edith’s Drive campus for apprentices working for local joinery firms.

The college’s joinery team underwent a series of rigorous assessments which demonstrated its ability to comply with the criteria required to deliver both the NVQ Level 3 and Advanced Award in site joinery.

Approval was granted by the Construction Awards Alliance and City & Guilds.

Kevin Vitty, workshop manager, at N & B Shopfitters Limited, based in Hunmanby, said: “This is great news for us as we are continually encouraging our workforce to take every opportunity to train to become highly skilled and fully qualified craftsmen.

“Our apprentices are more likely to want to study for their advanced qualification now they are being offered on their own doorstep.”

John Pownall, curriculum manager for construction, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer these qualifications to our apprentices which will greatly benefit the local construction industry.

“Prior to this students had to travel out of town to continue their studies and gain the much sought after higher qualifications and training.”

He added: “The quality assurance team at the Construction Awards Alliance cited the fact that their excellent ‘quality’ visits carried out by their advisers to the college’s vocational area as a reason for awarding the approval.”
