TODAY'S closure of Yates's, one of Scarborough's best-known and award-winning bars, does not bode well for the rest of the pub trade, according to the president of Scarborough Licensed Victuallers' Association.
Kath Duffy said: "If a big pub like that is closing, where that street is packed every weekend, what chance do the smaller pubs have?"

Yates's Wine Lodge, in St Nicholas Street, which opened in 1996, is expected to cease trading today with the loss of 15 jobs.

Just last year it was given a £100,000 revamp and was the overall winner in Scarborough's first Best Bar None competition – as well as scooping the top prize as the best bar. It is just yards from busy rivals Barracuda and Blue Lounge.

But this week Luton-based owners the Laurel Pub Company closed 60 of its sites across the country and put them up for sale.

A Laurel Pub Company spokeswoman said: "It is closing due to the impact of the smoking ban and difficult trading conditions."

Mrs Duffy, landlady of the Newcastle Packet in Sandside, said: "Even the people with beer gardens and smoking areas are still feeling the effects as well. In summer, when it's really nice, they will benefit but over the winter everyone has suffered."

She added the pub trade in Scarborough had always been a seasonal one and it had always been difficult between November and March. "But it's never been as bad as this winter. It's the same all over the country.

"It is very sad news about the loss of 15 jobs but other pubs will be taking more staff on at this time of year because it is seasonal work."

The Laurel Pub Company put 95 of its sites – including other leading brand names such as Hogs Head, Litten Tree and Bar Med – up for sale last month.

What chance does any small business in Scarborough stand, with the idiotic parking regime and over zelous parking attendants, they could all be doomed.

I really do feel sorry for the towns licencees and sure the small pubs will be the worst effected, those that do manage to survive the summer are sure looking forward to a very hard and dismal outlook for the winter.

Oh for heaven's sake. It's called changing times.

So many of these pubs have taken their customers for granted for so long, with poor service, watered down overpriced beer, dirty toilets, etc. No surprise that in this day and age many stay at home and drink cans purchased from Tesco for about half the price. Not having a go at the Packet, good little pub, but Yates's and many others only have themselves to blame.

I totally agree with English like what she is meant to be spoke. I think you have hit the nail on the head with all your comments.

If I was opening a business I wouldn't open in a street or area that has far too many bars & clubs already. How could these 3 pubs all stay open and make a profit? I feel this closure was on the cards.

It is far too easy to blame pub closures in the area on the smoking ban, while ignoring the true facts.

Another one gone but at least this one will not be missed. But it is going to be taken over by the guy who runs MIST so be prepared for stupid hefty bar prices. The it will probably last ..a year or so if lucky.

The Wicked Witch is dead!...

Thank God its finally over, shame it took so many Years for this “sad excuse for a pub” to close.

This Closure puts a end to years of abuse to the good
people of Scarborough from this arrogant Company.

Their should be NO place in today's society for large money grabbing companies trample over peoples lives for greed and show a total disregard to the people who live here!

Constant Loud Music!
Gangs of Drunks Shouting through the night!
Vomit & Urine in the streets!
Abuse and Violence is the Norm!
( do you really want to live like this? - (if yes try Blackpool)

Councils who let these monsters in are just short-sighted, they just see quick flashes of cash and grab it without a thought for local family pubs that have served our people for generations, or for the local residents who have to “live the nightmare” of the council’s decision’s to bring the monsters to our doorstep’s.

Yates like most money grabbing fast pubs was a law to its self and they operated with total disregard for anyone ,

local Council and Police were powerless to stop them??.– why?
(or complaints fell on deaf ears!) £=?

Save the Family Pubs
and lets get rid of these monsters for good!

Lets Get Scarborough on the map for the right reasons and dump the tacky image– TFF

oh yes,

of course yates was the only place in scarborough that had loud music/ drunk people and shouting

what ?// are you an idiot?/
the music was within limits, the inner doors were shut keeping the noise down.
the council did not do anything because nothing was wrong, have you nothing better to do but moan

if you have a problem why did you not come in and speak to the manager ( eg that was me) and say something, you did not you just went straight to council moaning.

by the way Yates is a family pub started other 100 years ago by the yates family..

if the police and council do not do anything then maybe ... hello nothing is wrong..

People would use the smaller local pubs more if their prices were a lot lower. Local people only have a certain amount of disposable income to spend on enjoyment and will use the cheaper venues.

There has also been loud music in this area for over 40 years. We lived in King Street in the 60's and had music nearly every night drifting into our house from the George Hotel.

We also had the noise from the brewery very early every morning. We just had to tolerate it, until we could afford to move out.

To be fair, the Yates's in Scarborough is only one of many Yates's pubs to close. Before they became 'trendy' Yates wine lodges were grubby, cheap and totally unique. They were also full of people from all age groups, not just the young.
