SCARBOROUGH'S shops could be set for a super summer.
Footfall in the town centre rose by more than 175,000 to a figure in the region of 1,565,000 for the first quarter of the year – and that is continuing into July, leaving the town on course for an extra 750,000 shoppers by the end of the year if the same trend carries on.

Town centre Manager Malcolm Hall said: "It's looking very good for the rest of the year – the week on week figures for the financial year so far are very, very encouraging. If the weather keeps up and the visitors keep coming to town it looks like it could be a very good year."

Last year's pre-Christmas footfall figures made gloomy reading for retailers – 34,000 fewer people visited the town centre in the first week of December than in the same week of 2007.

However, the overall footfall figure for 2008 was slightly up by 50,000 on the previous year, with 5,500,000 people in the town centre in 2008.

At Easter there were strong signs of recovery when an extra 24,000 people shopped in town in the holiday week – although the national trend has been for footfall to decrease.

Shopkeepers say there has been a noticeable upturn in business in recent weeks.

"Shopkeepers say there has been a noticeable upturn in business in recent weeks."

Which ones?

#1 The ones that remain open.

For example if 10,000 people used to shop in Boyes, Wilkinsons and Woolworths, for arguements sake you could say they each had one third share of the business. Now the same 10,000 can only shop in Boyes and Wilkinsons of the three shops mentioned above, so it could be said they now have a half share of that business.

Enterprising types would call that a 17%, or more likely almost 20%, rise in business.

'Shopkeepers say there has been a noticeable upturn in business in recent weeks'.

Course there has been an upturn, thats what happens every year!! Turnover dips after Christmas and gains momentum each month thereafter. So the most recent weeks will have been the strongest sales wise. That's the retail trend across the globe!!

Apologies for my arithmetic in comment 2, it s early for me yet today.

If a business increses its share of the market from one third to one half share, thats then business has seen a 50% rise in their share of that market.

So even although there may be less money around at the moment, the shops that have not folded are likely to be seeing increases in trade. As well as the reason highlited by #3

Town centre Manager Malcolm Hall brings out the old 'Footfall' joke as regular as clockwork.

This type of calculation is about as reliable as a chocolate fireguard. It is cash in tills that is the only calculation that matters.

You can have as many 'millions' as you want trudging up an down Westborough but if they are not spending then the 'Footfall' is irrelevant.

I wonder on the validity of the footfall figures and have to agree with Amaroo because I know when we go shopping we are up and down across and back again etc etc so how many times were we counted on the one shopping trip?

Let me ask again then...

"Shopkeepers say there has been a noticeable upturn in business in recent weeks."

Which shopkeepers? How noticeable? This does not sound like a Town Centre Manager's "footfall" figures, this sounds like positive statistics straight from the proverbial horses' mouths.

Except that we are given no idea which shopkeepers!

Come on Martin Herron, explain yourself.
